ONEONTA, N.Y. - The RPI Engineers scored a late first-half goal to secure a 1-0 win over the Oneonta women's soccer team in the final day of the Mayor's Cup. The Engineers are the tournament runner-up, while Hartwick is the champion of the Mayor's Cup. Oneonta falls to 1-2-1 with the loss, and RPI moves to 2-2-0.
Senior goalkeeper Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) stopped shots from Sophia Byron and Micaela Ross to keep the game scoreless. Freshman Violet Mattoni (Valhalla, NY/Valhalla) shot bottom left into the Engineers' goal, but goalie Audrey Montero made the save. Junior Emma Parente (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) shot high at 31:24, but again Montero was there to collect the save.
RPI scored with under a minute to play when Annabelle Bachhuber found Genevieve Ricci on the right side for the open shot to lead 1-0.
Oneonta had chances and controlled possession in the second half. Junior Gianna Hanner (Ridge, NY/Longwood) fired on goal at 66:42, but was turned aside. A red card on the RPI goalkeeper gave Oneonta the advantage at 70:43. The Red Dragons had attempts from V. Mattoni and junior Brenna Mast (Croghan, NY/Beaver River), but were unable to capitalize.
Meehan finished with five saves, and Montero had four.
RPI led 11-8 in shots and held a slight 6-5 corner kick advantage.
