ONEONTA, N.Y. - Sophomore Sara Kealey (Seaford, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) netted the game-winning goal in the 29th minute to give the Oneonta women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Mount Saint Mary on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 2-2-1 overall, while the Knights fall to 1-5-0.
Oneonta controlled the tempo early on, and freshman Violet Mattoni (Valhalla, NY/Valhalla) fired an on-goal attempt at 7:08 that Elizabeth Lennane saved. Senior Tara Nicholson (Bayside, NY/Archbishop Molloy) shot high at 8:45, and junior Emma Parente (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) nearly scored at 34:08 with a low shot saved by the Knights' goalkeeper.
The Red Dragons drew a foul at 38:36 for a short-range free kick from the Mount Saint Mary goal. Nicholson lined up and tapped a short pass to Kealey, who chipped the ball into the top corner of the Knights' goal to take a 1-0 lead.
Oneonta held Mount Saint Mary without a shot in the half to enter the break with the lead.
Oneonta continued the pressure in the second and outshot the Knights 11-3. Parente hit the crossbar at 61:07 and had a short-range shot saved at 68:42. In the final ten minutes, the Knights nearly scored off a top-right shot from Emma Mihale that goalie Amelia Cataldo (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) punched away at 80:23.
Oneonta outshot Mount Saint Mary 17-3 and held a 10-2 corner kick advantage.
The Red Dragons next host Vassar on Wed. Sept. 17 at 4 p.m.
