ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's soccer team fell 4-1 to visiting Vassar on Wednesday afternoon. The Brewers used two early first-half goals to pull away and then scored two more in the final six minutes to secure the non-conference victory. Oneonta falls to 2-3-1 overall, while Vassar moves to 6-1.
The Brewers controlled the tempo early and netted the opening goal at 3:57 from Elena Valle to take the early 1-0 lead. The offense continued with senior goalkeeper Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) making four stops against a barrage of Vassar shots. The Brewers finally broke through when Valle passed to Sonya Franklin for the 17th-minute goal.
Oneonta nearly scored in the 25th minute with back-to-back shots from junior Emma Parente (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) stopped by Laura Shea in front of the net.
The Red Dragons scored in the 67th minute when junior Brenna Mast (Croghan, NY/Beaver River) took a long-range shot from the right side of the Vassar net. Mast hit the high-arcing shot just over Shea to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Brewers prevented any comeback, scoring two goals within 30 seconds of each other. Franklin recorded the brace at 84:04, and Lucy Hart scored at 84:33.
Meehan made eight saves in the loss, while Shea had five.
Oneonta travels to play Union on Sept. 20 at 2 p.m.
