ONEONTA, N.Y. - Freshman Reilly Landisi (Beacon, NY/Beacon) netted her first career goal in the 50th minute to lift the Oneonta women's soccer team 1-0 over Skidmore to open the Mayor's Cup on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 1-1-1 overall, while Skidmore falls to 0-1-1.
An early downpour limited both offenses until senior Tara Nicholson (Bayside, NY/Archbishop Molloy) fired at the Skidmore goal at 20:37. Thoroughbreds goalkeeper Avery Rogers turned the shot away. Skidmore countered at 24:25 with senior goalkeeper Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) saving an attempt from Abby Lewis. Only one more shot was taken in the first half as the game entered the second half scoreless.
Sophomore Sara Kealey (Seaford, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) had an open attempt at 49:56, with the ball going straight into the Skidmore goalkeeper. Oneonta capitalized on the following corner. Junior Gianna Hanner (Ridge, NY/Longwood) managed to slip the ball to Landisi, who headed the ball into the back of the net at 50:22.
The Skidmore offense picked up with back-to-back on-goal shots from Alexandra Verna that Meehan picked up.
Meehan made one final save in the 85th minute to secure the shutout victory.
Skidmore outshot Oneonta 12-5, while the Red Dragons held an 8-4 corner kick advantage.
Meehan made six saves in goal, while Rogers had one. Sophia Sayers started the second half with two saves.
Oneonta next plays RPI in the Mayor's Cup on Sun. Sept. 7 at noon.
