Contrera Scores Hat Trick as Field Hockey Shuts Out Keuka, 5-0

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. -- The Oneonta field hockey team dismantled Keuka in a non-conference road game, 5-0, Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Nina Contrera (Rochester, NY/Hilton) scored her first goal as a Red Dragon and finished with three in the contest for a hat trick. Junior Alexandra Howell (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) recorded a goal and two assists, and junior Sarah Stadelmann (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) scored her first collegiate goal. The victory improved the Red Dragons to 2-1 on the season, while the Wolves fell to 0-1.

Oneonta got their first goal on the board at 4:46 when Keuka was trying to get the ball out of their zone and sophomore Nora Trimarchi (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) stole it. Trimarchi brought the ball into the shooting arc, took a shot on goal and had Howell redirect the ball into the left side of the cage for her third goal of the season.

At 17:01 in the second period, the Red Dragons extended their lead off a penalty corner. Senior Molly Miller (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) sent a pass out to Trimarchi, who gave a quick pass to junior Abigail Draper (Remsen, NY/Holland Patent). Draper went for a shot from the top of the arc, but she did not get the best connection and the ball rolled towards Contrera. Contrera gained control and smacked the ball into the back of the cage for her first goal with the team.

The Red Dragons put the game out of reach with three goals in the third period for the 5-0 final. Oneonta had a penalty corner at 33:48, where Howell had a shot that was kick saved, but Contrera was there for the second chance and backhanded it into the goal. On another penalty corner at 40:34, Stadelmann pushed the ball out to Draper for a shot attempt then she stepped in front of Draper's shot and redirected it over the goalkeeper's shoulder into the far side of the cage for her first career goal.

Less than a minute later, at 41:14, Contrera recorded the final goal of the game. Senior Gabby Alfinito (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) stole the ball and passed it to freshman Isabella Cunha (Carle Place, NY/Carle Place) at midfield. Cunha brought the ball up the field and dished it to Howell, who stepped inside the shooting arc and sent one more pass to Contrera. Contrera was on the left side of the arc when she fired the ball low into the goal for her hat trick.

Senior Maura Leib (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) guarded the cage for the full 60 minutes without a shot on goal for her first shutout of the season. Khadeeja Reed finished with eight saves for Keuka. Draper finished the game with two assists, while Trimarchi had one.

The Red Dragons outshout the Wolves 18-2 overall, 13-0 on target, and they finished with a 9-1 advantage in penalty corners.

Oneonta returns to action for their first home game of the season on Saturday, September 6, when they face Castleton at 12 pm on All College Field.
