ONEONTA, N.Y. - In an evenly fought SUNYAC opener, the Oneonta women's soccer team and Oswego drew 0-0 on Saturday afternoon on Red Dragon Field. The Red Dragons move to 2-4-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the conference, while the Lakers go to 3-3-2 and 0-0-1.
Early in the first half, senior goalkeeper Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) stopped a shot from Oswego's Nicolette Joannou at 1:55. Oneonta took its first shot attempt in the 21st minute when freshman Violet Mattoni (Valhalla, NY/Valhalla) had the ball sail right. The Red Dragons mustered one more attempt from Caroline Schimitsch (Little Neck, NY/The Mary Louis Academy) that went wide. Meehan saved another ball from Kyla Sustad at 35:14 to keep the game scoreless at the half.
After a pair of Lakers' shots in the second half, V. Mattoni struck toward the bottom left of the Oswego goal, but goalie Paytyn Crane made the stop. Meehan made three more daves in the final ten minutes to hold on for the draw.
Oswego outshot Oneonta 14-6 and held an 8-2 corner kick advantage.
Meehan finished with eight saves, while Crane had one.
Oneonta next hosts Potsdam for its Pick Game on Sat. Oct. 4 at 1 p.m.
