Pacers Overcome Red Dragons in Five Sets

SCRANTON, PA - The Oneonta women's volleyball team lost a back-and-forth match to Marywood on Wednesday evening, falling in five sets to the Pacers. The Red Dragons opened with a 25-22 first-set win before falling 25-16 in the second. Oneonta (10-6) answered in the third at 25-19, but Marywood (12-1) won the fourth and fifth sets 25-23 and 15-9, respectively.

After Marywood took an 18-16 lead in the first, Oneonta used a 4-0 run kicked off from a kill from junior Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac). Freshman Cadence Meltz (Highland, NY/Highland) added two consecutive aces to give the Red Dragons a 20-18 advantage. Sophomore Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville) sent in a kill, and an ace from junior Keira Welsh (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) made it 24-21. Landversicht blocked an attack to make it 1-0.

Oneonta fell in the second set before rebounding in the third. The Red Dragons trailed 9-6, but a 6-0 run comprised of two Morretta kills gave Oneonta a 12-9 lead. Marywood tied following a Tess Connolly ace, but kills from Landversicht made it 16-15. Another 6-0 Oneonta run pushed the Red Dragons ahead 22-16, and Oneonta made it 2-1 when the Pacers closed the set on a service error.

In the fifth set, Oneonta tied 6-6 after a kill from senior Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) and an ace from sophomore Hailey Herrera (Brooklyn, NY/Park Slope Collegiate). The Pacers took a 9-7 lead after a kill from Carolina Samaniego. Marywood closed out the set with a 6-1 span to take the match.

Landversicht led the team with 16 kills, four blocks, and two aces. McCabe added ten kills, while Morretta had ten kills and three blocks. Meltz finished with four aces and 18 digs, while Herrera made 41 assists.

Genevieve Pollock led Marywood with 18 kills, and Samaniego had 11. Connolly had six aces, and Taylor Hallam finished with five blocks. Ayla Bransford dished out 39 assists, and Catie Woolf tallied 20 digs.

Oneonta next travels to Canton to open SUNYAC play on Oct. 3 at 6 p.m.
