CLINTON, N.Y. -- The Oneonta men's soccer team was tripped up in their non-conference road match against Hamilton, 3-1, Wednesday afternoon. Hamilton scored twice within the first 30 minutes of play, then they added one more in the 77th minute before senior
Zach Rabadi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) netted Oneonta's goal in the closing minutes of the match. The result moved the Red Dragons to 5-2-1 on the season, while the Continentals improved to 3-2-2 overall.
"We were still in the game at 2-0, and had some chances, but goals change games," head coach
Iain Byrne commented. "They took their chances but we couldn't capitalize on ours, and that was the difference."
The first goal for Hamilton was scored in the fourth minute after Oneonta tried to clear the ball out of the box, and it deflected off a Red Dragon defender's foot to Continental's Zach Tracy, who got the ball and scored. Hamilton increased their lead in the 27th minute during a free kick where Anthony Ndiolo scored off a header in front of the net. Senior
Luigi Prosperi (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) recorded a couple of shots on goal after Ndiolo's goal, to try and get Oneonta on the board, but they were both saved by the Continentals' keeper, Tobin Walsh.
The Continentals scored their third goal of the game when Sean Curran floated a chip shot from 12 yards out over junior
James Cintron (Poughkeepsie, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) for the score.
In the 88th minute of the match, the Red Dragons were awarded a penalty kick where Rabadi beat Walsh for his first goal of the season. Sophomore
Tommy Kliampas (South Huntington, NY/Walt Whitman) and junior
Zach Tanner (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) each registered a shot attempt on goal in the final minute of play to make it a one-goal game, however neither got past Walsh.
Cintron finished the match with one save for Oneonta, while Walsh had four saves for Hamilton.
The Red Dragons outshot the Continentals 10-7 overall, 5-4 in shots on net, and they had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Oneonta's next match is on Saturday, September 27, for the start of SUNYAC play when they travel to face Oswego at 11 am.
