No. 24 Men’s Soccer Dismantles Hartwick in Battle of the Hills, 6-1

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The No. 24 nationally ranked Oneonta men's soccer team upended crosstown rival Hartwick in the Battle of the Hills, 6-1, Tuesday evening on Red Dragon Field. Sophomore Tommy Kliampas (South Huntington, NY/Walt Whitman) led the team with a brace, while senior Milton Mancias Magana (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) finished with a goal and an assist, and senior Zach Rabadi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) totaled two assists. Freshman Jack Bochenski (Eastchester, NY/Eastchester) and junior Liam Jeannotte-Recio (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) both recorded their first career points with the team as the Red Dragons improved to 4-1-1 on the season and the Hawks dropped to 1-4-1 overall.

"It was a tough first half, but the goals in the second took the pressure off," head coach Iain Byrne commented.

The scoreless tie was broken in the 21st minute when senior Luigi Prosperi (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) scored his second goal of the season off a header. Mancias Magana took a free kick that was 35 yards out and sent the ball into the box. Rabadi tracked the ball down and kept it from going out at the end line with a pass that went off the goalkeeper's foot and into the air, where Prosperi leaped for the header and scored the first goal of the game.

The Red Dragons added onto their lead just before halftime, in the 42nd minute, off a corner kick. Sophomore Anthony Traube (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) kicked the corner into the nearside of the goal area and found junior Zach Tanner (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Saint Anthony's), who redirected the ball into the net on his first touch with his right foot. The score was Tanner's first goal as a Red Dragon.

Oneonta's offense really found its stride in the second half and rallied for four goals in the final 30 minutes of play. Kliampas netted both of his goals identically in the 62nd and 77th minute off of long lead passes that he had to track down at the top of the box. Both times, the Hawks' keeper came out and tried to dive for the ball, but Kliampas beat him each time then he took one step to the left for an open shot into the net. The sophomore's first goal was assisted by Mancias Magana and Rabadi, while his second one was assisted by senior Kevin Butler (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees).

In between Kliampas's goals, Mancias Magana netted his second of the season in the 71st minute. Bochenski stole the ball at midfield and sent a long pass to the Mamaroneck, N.Y. native at the top of the box. Mancias Magana then brought the ball in towards the net and fired a shot low and to the left of the keeper for the score.

Hartwick scored their lone goal in the 82nd minute off the foot of Andres Ordonez Acosta, then Oneonta tallied the final goal of the game in the 84th minute. The Hawks were trying to get the ball out of their zone when one defender sent a pass to their keeper, and he scooped it up which resulted in a Red Dragon indirect free kick 10 yards in front of the net. With nine defenders lined up on the goal line along side the Hartwick goalie, Jeannotte-Recio rolled the indirect kick directly behind him to sophomore Nico Loaiza (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) who lasered a shot over a couple defenders into the net.

Junior James Cintron (Poughkeepsie, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) started the first 74:15 of the match and finished with four saves in the win, and freshman Nico Osorio (Valley Stream, NY/St. Dominick's) logged his first career minutes in net as a Red Dragon and he recorded one save in the final 15:45. Jelani Usim started the first half for the Hawks and stopped three shots, while Matthew Morrison played in the second half and made one save.

The Red Dragons had a 22-7 advantage in total shots, 10-6 with shots on target, and an 8-5 edge in corner kicks.

Oneonta's next match is on Saturday, September 20, when they host RPI in a non-conference contest at 2 pm on Red Dragon Field.
