CANTON, N.Y. -- The Oneonta field hockey team fell on the road in their 2025 season opener to St. Lawrence, 3-0, Friday afternoon. St. Lawrence tallied two goals in the middle of the second quarter, then one more in the final period to take the match. Senior
Maura Leib (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) saved 15 shots for a .833 save percentage.
Following a scoreless first quarter, the Saints recorded their first goal at 21:58, then they extended their lead a few minutes later to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. The home team scored the final goal of the game in the fourth quarter at 50:25.
Oneonta had a few chances to get on the board throughout the game. Junior
Abigail Draper (Remsen, NY/Holland Patent) had a couple opportunities off penalty corners in the first period, but her first shot was saved by a Saints defender and her second went wide of the cage. At 9:33 in the first, junior
Alexandra Howell (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) took a penalty stroke for the Red Dragons but missed the shot wide. Howell's next shot was on goal, however it was saved by St. Lawrence's keeper, Elizabeth Walsh.
Sophomore
Nora Trimarchi (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls), graduate student
Caitlyn Caulfield (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland), and senior
Molly Miller (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa), each recorded a shot on goal, but they were unfortunately stopped by Walsh.
Alongside Leib's 15 saves, Draper recorded a defensive save for the Red Dragons. Walsh finished with four saves for the Saints.
St. Lawrence outshot Oneonta 21-5 on net, and they held an 11-7 advantage in penalty corners.
The Red Dragons are back in action Saturday, August 30, for a non-conference match against Utica in Canton, N.Y. at 2 pm.
