ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team earned wins over Utica (1-1) and Penn College (0-2) to open the season at Friday's Red Dragon Invitational. The Red Dragons (2-0) defeated the Pioneers 3-2 before sweeping the Wildcats 3-0 in the nightcap.
Oneonta and Utica traded sets, with the Red Dragons winning the first 25-18. Utica took the second 25-21, and Oneonta bounced back to win 25-18 in the third. Utica forced a fifth set following a 25-20 win, but the Red Dragons closed out 15-12 in the final.
Junior Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) led the team with a career-high 15 kills and four blocks, while sophomore Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville) added 14. Junior Keira Welsh (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) knocked in eight. Senior Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) led the team with five blocks. Freshman Layla Pertchik (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) dished out 42 assists with 12 digs, while senior Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior) grabbed 34 digs. Freshman Cadence Meltz (Highland, NY/Highland) had two aces.
For the Pioneers, Trinity Bailey led both teams with 18 kills. Lauren Jones added ten. Alicia Ancewiz made 14 assists, and Megan Wright tallied 25 digs.
Oneonta jumped to an 8-3 lead in the fifth set following a kill from Landversicht. Utica used a 3-0 run to cut the lead to two before a pair of errors made it 10-6. Utica managed to make it 13-12, but Oneonta took the following two points with a kill from McCabe and a match-winning ace by Meltz.
Oneonta swept Penn College 25-13, 25-11, and 25-8 to close out the day. Welsh knocked in ten kills, while junior Autumn Singleton (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) added six. Meltz recorded six aces, and Pertchik finished with five. Sophomore Kayla Kean (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa Central) recorded seven digs.
Oneonta's lead was never in doubt, as the Red Dragons went ahead 11-2 in the third after kills from senior Sabrinna Squicciarini and Pertchik. A 4-0 run to close the set sealed the match victory, with Squicciarini sending in the final kill.
Oneonta continues the Red Dragon Invitational on Saturday, August 30. Oneonta first plays Geneseo (2-0) at 10 a.m. and then Baruch (0-2) at 2 p.m.
