ONEONTA, N.Y. - The 2025 edition of the Battle of the Hills proved to be a draw, as the Oneonta women's soccer team tied Hartwick 0-0 to open the season on Friday afternoon. Both teams move to 0-0-1 on the year.
The Hawks struck first at 2:15 when Millie Caldon fired a shot at the Oneonta goal. Senior goalie Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) made the save to prevent an early goal. Oneonta responded in the 10th minute when junior Gianna Hanner (Ridge, NY/Longwood) hit the crossbar, and a shot from sophomore Sara Kealey (Seaford, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) was blocked on the rebound attempt. Hartwick rattled off two back-to-back shots from Lily Dempsey in the 16th minute, but they were blocked and high. Junior Emma Parente (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) took a late attempt in the half that Hartwick's Mikayla Piersa knocked away to keep it scoreless at the break.
Senior Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) shot twice to start the second half, with one saved by the Hawks' goalkeeper. Meehan stopped a pair of Hartwick shots in the 63rd minute. The offenses slowed down in the final minutes, with final attempts from Hartwick's Jenna Mierek and Oneonta's Reilly Landisi (Beacon, NY/Beacon) being saved by the respective goalkeepers.
Hartwick had a slight 12-10 shot advantage, while corners were 1-1. Meehan made four saves in goal, and Piersa had three.
Oneonta returns to host Brockport on Sat. Aug. 30 at 1 p.m.
