ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta women's tennis team opened the 2025 season against city-rival Hartwick with the Battle of the Hills in Wilber Park, Thursday afternoon. The Red Dragons dropped the match, 7-0, to start the season 0-1, while the Hawks moved to 1-0.
Hartwick swept the three doubles courts to secure the match point. Oneonta's top team, junior
Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) and sophomore
Annika Cripe (Islip, N.Y./Islip), came up short on the No. 1 court to Phoebe Olson and Gianna Leggieri, 6-3. The duo of sophomore
Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and freshman
Kiersten Rufrano (Oneonta, NY) were bested on the No. 2 court by Samantha Lantzy and Lily Vanuga, 6-1, and the freshmen pairing of
Dakota Jimenez (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) and
Ashley Glaviano (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) fell, 6-2, on court No. 3 to Maggie Van Valkenbur and Maddi Morrison.
In singles play, Peck was stopped by Lantzy in straight 6-2 sets on the No. 1 court. Cripe battled Olson in the second set on the No. 2 singles court and tried to force a tiebreaker, however Olson took the match, 6-1, 6-4. Both Plue and Glaviano allowed a 6-0, 6-2 decision on the No. 3 and No. 6 courts, respectively. Rufrano was subdued on the No. 4 court, 6-0, 6-1, and Jimenez dropped her singles match on the No. 5 court, 6-1, 6-0.
The Red Dragons are back in action on Saturday, September 6, for their home opener against Farmingdale at 10 am at the Dr. Heissan '63 tennis courts.
