Stephen Barikyan (Tappan/Tappan Zee) and junior
Jamie O'Neil (Bath, N.Y./Haverling) swept the SUNYAC Men's Lacrosse Athletes of the Week awards, announced by the conference Monday afternoon. Barikyan earned defensive honors after his historic performance as a faceoff specialist, while O'Neil picked up the offensive accolade as the pair led Oneonta to a 23-5 conference victory over Canton last week.
O'Neil continued his dominant offensive play with six goals and three assists to tie his career-high total of nine points. The junior attackman recorded four goals and two assists in the first period alone, while he also scooped up three ground balls and caused a turnover to help improve Oneonta to 5-6 overall and 2-0 in the conference. O'Neil currently leads the SUNYAC in points (64), assists (32), and ranks second in goals (32).
Barikyan set a pair of program records in Oneonta's win. The senior faceoff specialist won a program-high 25 of 28 faceoffs, finishing with an impressive .893 win percentage. In addition to his faceoff dominance, he collected a record-breaking 17 ground balls. After the victory, Barikyan now leads the SUNYAC in both faceoffs won (165-for-260) and ground balls collected (96), solidifying his place as one of the top faceoff specialists.
Oneonta is back in action on Wednesday, April 4, for a SUNYAC road game against Oswego starting at 4 pm.
