HOBOKEN, NJ. -- The Oneonta men's lacrosse team dropped their non-conference game at No. 8 nationally ranked Stevens Institute, 18-8, Saturday afternoon. Oneonta was within four at the halfway point then Stevens outscored them 8-2 in the second half. Junior
Jamie O'Neil (Bath, N.Y./Haverling) led the team with three goals and two assists for five points and sophomore
Thomas Hnis (Smithtown, N.Y./Kings Park) scored four times. The result moved the Red Dragons to 1-3 on the season while the Ducks improved to 5-0 overall.
Hnis gave Oneonta the 1-0 lead with a no-look, behind the back goal at 12:33. Stevens recorded four straight to go up 4-1 at 4:12. Junior
Daniel Macchiarella (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) ripped in his first goal of the season off a pass from senior
Matthew Krieg (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue), but the Ducks answered with one to end the first ahead, 5-2.
The Red Dragons got to within one, 6-5, at 10:03 in the second after O'Neil scored a pair of goals then Hnis fired in his second of the game off an assist from sophomore
Ryan Lussier (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills Ballston Lake). Stevens had four unanswered and went up 10-5 with 1:54 to play in the first half. O'Neil recorded his hat trick off a pass from Krieg to pull Oneonta within four, 10-6, at halftime.
Hnis received a pass from O'Neil and netted his third of the game at 10:03 in the third period, however Stevens scored twice in the quarter to enter the fourth ahead, 12-7. O'Neil found Hnis again on a man-up opportunity in the final period to make it 13-8 with 13:34 to play, then the Ducks closed out the game with five goals.
Krieg finished the game with three assists. Senior
Stephen Barikyan (Tappan/Tappan Zee) went 11-for-26 on faceoffs and picked up the team-high six ground balls. Junior
Aidan Greene (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) had five ground balls and caused a turnover.
Freshman
Mark Restivo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) recorded 22 saves for a .550 save percentage, and Cooper Foote saved nine shots for Stevens.
The Ducks outshot the Red Dragons 40-18 on goal and had a 46-28 edge in ground balls.
Oneonta is back in action on Wednesday, March 12, against Calvin University in Jacksonville, Florida at 11 am.
