Men’s Lacrosse Split Spring Break Play with Win Over Calvin

JACKSONVILLE, FL. -- The Oneonta men's lacrosse team traveled to Jacksonville, Florida for spring break, and went 1-1 with a victory against Calvin University. The team defeated the Knights, 13-10, then were beaten by DeSales University, 18-15. The Red Dragons improved to 2-4 on the season, the Knights dropped to 3-2, and the Bulldogs moved to 1-6 overall.

Junior Jamie O'Neil (Bath, N.Y./Haverling) led Oneonta with eight goals and eight assists for 16 points on the week. Sophomore Thomas Hnis (Smithtown, N.Y./Kings Park) recorded five goals and two assists between the two games, senior Matthew Krieg (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) finished with one goal and six assists, and junior Anthony Munro (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) scored five times.

Oneonta 13, Calvin 10
Calvin got out to a 2-1 lead at 9:11 in the opening period before Oneonta recorded four straight goals to take a 5-2 lead. Munro received a pass from Krieg to tie the game, and sophomore Ryan Lussier (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) put the Red Dragons ahead off a pass from junior Daniel Macchiarella (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) at 3:30. O'Neil got the ball from senior Vincent Tirino (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) and netted his second goal of the game on a man-up opportunity then he assisted Hnis with 14 seconds left in the period. In the closing seconds, Calvin's Josh Moyer scored a quick goal to make it a 5-3 deficit.

The Knights used the second period to outscore the Red Dragons 4-2 to tie the game, 7-7, entering halftime. Hnis and O'Neil each scored in the early moments of the quarter, however Calvin recorded three straight goals, including two on extra-man opportunities, to end the first half tied.

Both teams traded a pair of goals with each other and entered the fourth quarter tied at nine. O'Neil regained the lead for the team at 9:30 off a pass from Krieg. Calvin knotted the game at eight, then senior Stephen Barikyan (Tappan/Tappan Zee) won the ensuing faceoff and found O'Neil for his fifth goal of the game. Calvin scored their ninth goal with 16 seconds remaining in the period.

The Red Dragons took flight in the fourth period and outpaced the Knights to outscore them 4-1 for the 13-10 victory. Freshman Tim Navin () gave the team the lead for good with a goal at 13:43, then Hnis made it a two-goal game 50 seconds later after he received the ball from O'Neil. Calvin got back within one with 10:45 to play, but Oneonta shut them out and added two more goals within a minute of one another for the final margin. O'Neil dished the ball to Munro for the first score before senior Vincent Herbstman (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) netted the final goal of the game off a pass from Hnis with 9:08 remaining.

O'Neil finished with five goals and three assists for eight points, while Hnis recorded three goals with an assist, and Krieg tallied four assists. Lussier had three ground balls and caused a turnover along with a goal.

Barikyan won 10 faceoffs and had a team-high seven ground balls. Restivo ended the game with 18 saves for a .643 save percentage and totaled six ground balls. Sophomore David Trahan (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) caused the game-high four turnovers, while junior Aidan Greene (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) caused a turnover and collected three ground balls.

Oneonta led in total shots 50-40, both had 28 shots on goal, while Calvin had a 36-32 advantage in ground balls. The Red Dragons were 20-for-27 on clear attempts and 1-for-1 on the man-up advantage, and the Knights were 20-for-20 on clears, and 2-for-3 with an extra-man.

Oneonta 15, DeSales 18
Oneonta took a 3-2 lead after a back-and-forth first period. Munro fired in his first goal of the contest 35 seconds into the game before O'Neil scored one off a pass from senior Andrew Guinto (Syracuse/West Genesee). O'Neil later dished it to Hnis with 1:35 left in the period for the one-goal advantage.

DeSales went on a 7-1 stretch to go up 9-4 at halftime. Herbstman recorded his third goal of the season off an assist from O'Neil in the second quarter for Oneonta's one goal.

The Bulldogs scored two more to go up seven at 13:49 in the third, then the Red Dragons closed out the quarter with a 5-1 run to cut their deficit to 12-9. Krieg and O'Neil helped each other find the back of the net before Hnis ripped one past the goalie off a pass from Guinto, then Barikyan won the faceoff and beat the keeper for the goal at 11:12. Tirino pulled the team within three with his second goal of the season off a pass from Hnis.

Oneonta kept possession of the ball early in the fourth quarter and tied the game at 12 with 13:21 to play. Hnis opened the quarter with a score, then Munro recorded a pair for his hat trick. DeSales scored four unanswered for a 16-12 lead with 9:14 left. O'Neil and Navin found the back of the net to pull within two, however the Bulldogs made a pair for an 18-14 edge with 2:34 remaining. Guinto netted the final goal with 2:21 left, then DeSales held off Oneonta in the remaining moments.

O'Neil finished with three goals and five assists for eight points, while Hnis had four points with a hat trick and an assist. Munro recorded a hat trick, Guinto added a goal and two assists, and both Krieg and Navin had a goal and an assist.

Barikyan was 18-for-35 on faceoffs with 11 ground balls and a goal. Greene caused three turnovers, Guinto caused two and had three ground balls, and freshman Hunter Busch (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) picked up four ground balls.

Restivo finished with 17 saves for the Red Dragons, while Hunter Waldron had nine saves for the Bulldogs.

DeSales outshot Oneonta 56-36 and had a 44-27 ground ball advantage. The Red Dragons were 18-for-21 on clear attempts and were 0-for-2 on man-up opportunities, while the Bulldogs were 19-for-20 on clear attempts and 2-for-3 with the extra man.
