ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta men's lacrosse team started conference play with a dominating 20-5 victory over Plattsburgh Saturday afternoon at Red Dragon Field. The Red Dragons had 15 different players record a point, 14 of which netted a goal, as the team improved to 4-6 overall, 1-0 in the SUNYAC, and the Cardinals fell to 4-4 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.
Sophomore 
Thomas Hnis (Smithtown, N.Y./Kings Park) had the team-high five points with two goals and three assists, junior 
Jamie O'Neil (Bath, N.Y./Haverling) had three goals with an assist, and junior 
Anthony Munro (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) recorded three goals. Senior 
Vincent Herbstman (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) finished with two goals and an assist, while senior 
Vincent Tirino (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) ended with a goal and two assists.
Plattsburgh gained an early 3-0 edge in the opening period until Oneonta scored eight straight to take an 8-3 lead into halftime. O'Neil worked around his defender from behind the cage for a shot to put the Red Dragons on the board, then Hnis hit the back of the net on a man-up advantage and senior 
Gavin Teiner (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) tied the game after he restarted the play from behind the goal and sprinted past his defender for an open shot in front of the Cardinal's keeper to end the first period.
Freshman 
Tim Navin () snuck a shot into the upper-90 of the cage for his fourth goal of the season, then junior 
Sergio Ilario (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) cut towards the net and received a pass from O'Neil for his third goal of the season to make it 5-3 at 14:08 in the second. Junior 
Aidan Greene (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) scored his first goal of the season off a pass from senior 
Matthew Krieg (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue), and Munro capped off the scoring in the first half with a pair of goals for the Red Dragons' five-goal lead.
Herbstman dished it to Munro for his hat trick, and 15th goal of the season, in between a couple of Plattsburgh goals for a 9-5 lead at 9:16 in the third. Oneonta went on to shutout Plattsburgh for the remainder of the game and scored 11 unanswered goals for the 20-5 final. After O'Neil scored his second of the day, Herbstman recorded his 10th and 11th of the season, and junior 
Daniel Macchiarella (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) scored his fifth of the year off a pass from Tirino at the last second of the third period.
Sophomore 
Johnny Terrana (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) went the length of the field with the ball and ripped one into the net to start of the fourth period and later assisted senior 
Andrew Guinto (Syracuse/West Genesee) for his second goal of the season. Hnis lasered one low for his 29th of the season off a pass from Tirino, then Tirino later scored a quick man-up goal off a pass from Krieg for his fifth of the year.
After Hnis' score, O'Neil netted his 25th of the season on a pass by Teiner. Following Tirino's extra man goal, senior 
Stephen Barikyan (Tappan/Tappan Zee) won the ensuing faceoff, recovered the ground ball and went straight to the cage for his fourth goal of the season. With just under two minutes to play, sophomore 
Finn Morris (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) worked past his defender and went top shelf for the final goal of the game, his third of the season.
Terrana, Teiner, and Navin all recorded a goal and an assist. Krieg finished the day with two assists and currently has 19 this season. Barikyan finished 20-for-25 in faceoffs and had the game-high 11 ground balls.
Freshman 
Mark Restivo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) finished with 11 saves for a .688 save percentage in 58:12, and junior 
Ryan Collins (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) picked up a save in the final 1:48. Greene had seven ground balls and caused two turnovers, sophomore 
David Trahan (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) caused the game-high three turnovers and picked up three ground balls, and senior 
Matthew Mangels (St. James/Smithtown East) caused two turnovers and had four ground balls.
Plattsburgh's Dylan Ruland scored all five goals for the team and Cole Orehosky had nine saves for the Cardinals.
Oneonta outshot Plattsburgh 50-27, 29-17 on net, and finished with a 31-13 advantage in ground balls. The Red Dragons were 2-for-3 on extra man opportunities and 16-for-17 on clear attempts, while the Cardinals were 0-for-3 on the man-up and 17-for-22 on clears.
Oneonta starts a three-game SUNYAC road trip on Friday, April 4, in Canton at 6 pm.
