Men’s Tennis Secure Victory Over Dickinson in Spring Break Play

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- The Oneonta men's tennis team went 1-2 in their spring break play in Ashland, Virginia and Hilton Head, South Carolina, last week. The Red Dragons defeated Dickinson College, 4-3, and fell short to Pfeiffer University and Baldwin Wallace. The team improved to 6-5 overall this season.

Oneonta dropped all three doubles matches to Pfeiffer, 6-2, then the two teams split the singles matches where the Red Dragons took courts one, two, and three, and the Falcons took courts four, five, and six to hold onto the match.

Junior William Schmid (Yonkers/Salesian HS) bested Benedikt Pfeiffer on the No. 1 court in a split set victory, 2-6, 6-4, 10-7. Sophomore Chris Chippari (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C Ketcham) outpaced Mathius Dessureau on the No. 2 court in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Freshman Jaden Ritterman (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) came away with a split set win on court No. 3 against Andres Valdez-Arze, 1-6, 6-0, 10-2.

The teams split the doubles matches, however Baldwin Wallace won two of the three for the doubles point. Chippari and Schmid defeated Matt McGee and Henry Harders on the No. 1 court, 6-2.

The Yellow Jackets took five of six singles matches in an 8-game pro set. Chippari recorded the lone Red Dragon match point with an 8-5 vicotry on the No. 1 court over Will Horvath. Freshman Ryan Geller (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y./Cornwall) fell short on the No. 5 court, 8-5, and Ritterman was tripped up on the No. 3 court, 8-4. Freshman Peter Pitaleff (Garrison, N.Y./Highland Falls Fort Montgomery) and Schmid each dropped their respective singles matches, 8-3.

Dickinson took two of the three doubles matches for the doubles point. Ritterman and Pitaleff bested Florian Anderson and Ryan Whiting on the No. 2 court, 6-3. Chippari and Schmid dropped the No. 1 court, 6-3, and the Red Devils took court No. 3, 6-1.

Dickinson went ahead 3-2 in the match after they got courts one and four in singles play, while Chippari won court No. 2 against Drew Allen, 7-5, 6-1, and Ritterman secured No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Anderson.

The Red Dragons completed the comeback and secured the victories with wins on the five and six singles courts. Geller away with court five in straight sets against Ryan Whiting, 6-2, 6-3, to tie the match, then junior Nate Inzerillo (Center Moriches/Center Moriches) clinched the match with a 6-2, 7-5 victory on court No. 6 over Talon Baker.

Oneonta is back in action on Saturday, March 22, for a road match at Farmingdale at 1 pm.
