No. 9 Wrestling Flattens Oswego State, 44-5

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The No. 9 nationally ranked Oneonta wrestling team upended Oswego State in a dual, 44-5, Wednesday evening in front of their home crowd in G. Hal Chase gymnasium. The Red Dragons recorded four pins, a tech fall, and a major decision in the victory as the team improved to 15-2 in duals this season and the Lakers dropped to 3-10.

The team won nine of the 10 matches and had all four of their falls recorded in the first period. Sophomore Cameron Hinchcliff (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) started the match with a 1:31 pin against Matt Douherty at 125 lbs. Sophomore Mason Rappold (/) pinned David Hammerle in 1:24 at 165 lbs., then senior Kenneth Sauer (Franklin, NY/Franklin) recorded a 1:55 fall over Aaron Fredenburg at 174 lbs. Senior Carson LiCastri (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow High School) was the final Red Dragon to record a fall as he defeated Kevin Arriaza in 1:33 at 197 lbs.

Junior Avery Leonard (Milford, N.Y./Milford Central) walked away with a 17-2 tech fall in 3:00 at 149 lbs. against Steven Ventricelli. The victory was Leonard's 18th tech fall win of the season, which leads all of NCAA Division I, II, and III. Senior Jack Ryan (Trumbull, CT/) beat Avery Canzano with a few takedowns in an 11-1 major decision at 184 lbs.

Freshman Jackson Maby (Susquehanna, PA/Susquehanna Community) scored an escape in the third period and was awarded riding time for a 2-0 decision over Michael Santore at 141 lbs., and junior Kennith Jackson (New Orleans, LA/) capped off the win with a couple takedowns in a 7-2 decision at 285 lbs. against Dustin Koskinen-Falls. Senior Danny Poggi (West Islip, NY/West Islip) earned the team six points at 133 lbs. with a win by forfeit.

Oneonta is back in action on Saturday, February 5, for a quad meet at No. 23 Williams College starting at 11 a.m. The Red Dragons will compete against the Ephs, No. 13 Ithaca, and Wesleyan.
