No. 8 Wrestling Set to Compete at NCAA Region 2 Qualifier

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The No. 8 Oneonta wrestling team is sending 10 wrestlers down to Lycoming College to compete in the NCAA Region 2 Qualifier on Saturday and Sunday, March 1-2. Nineteen colleges will compete at the two-day tournament in Williamsport, Pa., and the top three finishers from each of the 10 weight classes will qualify and advance to the NCAA Championships on March 14-15, in Providence, Rhode Island.

The tournament begins on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Keiper Recreation Center. Tickets will be available at the door (cash-only) for $10 for adults, $6 for senior citizens, students and children for all sessions. Single-day passes are $7 for adults, $4 for senior citizens, students and children.

All 10 Red Dragons hold a regional ranking in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association rankings and two are ranked nationally heading into the tournament. Senior Jack Ryan (Trumbull, CT/), who is a two-time NCAA qualifier and an All-American last season, is the NWCA top-ranked 184-pounder in the nation. Junior Avery Leonard (Milford, N.Y./Milford Central), who qualified for the NCAA tournament at 141 lbs. in 2023 when he competed for Alvernia University, is ranked fourth in the nation at 149 and second in the region.

Ryan is 28-1 this season with 16 falls, one tech fall and two majors. Leonard is 39-1 with four pins, 24 tech falls, and five major decisions. He currently leads the NCAA in tech falls.

Sophomore Mason Rappold (/) and senior Carson LiCastri (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow High School) are ranked fourth in the region at 165 and 197, respectively. Rappold is 23-2 with 14 falls and two tech falls, while LiCastri is 36-4 with 18 pins, six tech falls and four majors this season. Senior 133-pounder Danny Poggi (West Islip, NY/West Islip) is fifth in the region with a 29-13 record that includes five falls, three tech falls, six majors and one sudden victory.

Freshmen 141-pounder Jackson Maby (Susquehanna, PA/Susquehanna Community) and 157-pounder Ryley Monica (Adams, NY/South Jefferson Central) were a pair of Red Dragon first-years that made an immediate impact on the mat this season. Maby is sixth in the region and posted a 28-3 record with 10 falls, eight tech falls and four majors, while Monica went 21-9 with two pins, eight tech falls and two majors.

Senior Kenneth Sauer (Franklin, MA./Franklin) enters the tournament ranked sixth at 174 lbs., with a 14-5 record that includes nine falls and three majors. Junior Kennith Jackson (New Orleans, LA/) is seventh regionally in the heavyweight class with a record of 26-14 that includes 17 pins, the second most on the team, and one major. Sophomore Cameron Hinchcliff (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) is ranked eighth in Region 2 at 125 and is 24-9 this season with five falls, nine tech falls, and two majors.
