Red Dragons Compete at ITA Men’s Tennis Regional Championships

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Four members of the Oneonta men's tennis team traveled to Skidmore College for the ITA Northeast Regional Championships this past weekend. Senior William Schmid (Yonkers/Salesian HS) and junior Chris Chippari (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) played in doubles and singles action, while sophomores Peter Pitaleff (Garrison, N.Y./Highland Falls Fort Montgomery) and Jaden Ritterman (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) competed in doubles play. Both doubles teams picked up a win at the tournament, and Chippari secured a victory in singles play.

Chippari's opening singles match in the main draw was against RIT's Alex Turcotte. The Poughkeepsie, N.Y., native held off Turcotte from forcing a tiebreaker in each set and defeated him, 7-5, 7-5. Chippari then fell in the round of 32 to the three seed of the tournament, TCNJ's Harrison Maitland-Carter. Maitland-Carter took the match in straight 6-2 sets.

Schmid also competed in the singles main draw, and faced RIT's Evan Ly in the opening round. The first set was back-and-forth between the two and went into a tiebreak, where Ly got the upper hand over Schmid, 7-4. He then went on to take the second set for a 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 final.

As a team, Chippari and Schmid went up against Drew University's Jesse Faro and Daniel Arcar in the main draw. The Red Dragon pairing overwhelmed the Rangers duo and won, 8-3. In the round of 16, Chippari and Schmid took on Vassar's Nolan Kubiak and Fernando Bauermeister, and were bested by the Brewers, 8-3.

In the opening round of the doubles 'B' draw, Pitaleff and Ritterman took on Skidmore's Mahen Bitkuri and Bruce Lunder, and were tripped up by the Thoroughbreds duo, 8-3. In the consolation round, the sophomore tandem faced TCNJ's Curtis Gruber and Olufela Fieulleteau. Neither side could get the advantage over the other and they went into a tiebreaker where Pitaleff and Ritterman defeated Gruber and Fieulleteau, 7-3, for the 8-7 (7-3) victory.

Hamilton's Tarun Korwar won the singles main draw, while Hobart's Jacob Linares and Nicholas Fischer won the doubles main draw, and Hamilton's Filip Glov Moeller and Alejandro Fernandez Lecaroz took the doubles 'B' draw.

Oneonta is back in action on Saturday, October 11, for a match against Alfred at 1 pm at the Dr. Heissan Courts. The Red Dragons will be dedicating their match against the Saxons to Morgan's Message, an organization that strives to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community and equalize the treatment of physical and mental health in athletics.
