ALFRED, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team went 1-1 at the Alfred Tri-Match on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons (15-10) first swept Pitt-Greensburg (2-21) 3-0 before falling to Alfred State (13-10) 3-2.
In the opening match, Oneonta defeated the Bobcats 25-16, 25-18, and 25-18.
The Red Dragons took a 15-7 lead in the first set following a kill by freshman Lily Pugliese (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) and an ace by sophomore Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville). Oneonta followed with a 6-0 run, capped off with a kill by senior Sabrina Squicciarini (Manorville, NY/St. Anthony's) and an ace by freshman Cadence Meltz (Highland, NY/Highland) to go ahead 22-10. Pitt-Greensburgh went on a 6-1 run to cut the lead to 23-16 before Oneonta took the final two points.
The Bobcats tied 11-11 in the second before the Red Dragons rattled off a 4-0 run with an ace from sophomore Addison Tantin and a kill by senior Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia). Squicciarini knocked in a kill to spur a 5-0 Oneonta run to push the lead to 20-13. The Bobcats pulled within four before two kills from junior Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) and an ace by junior Lillian Slattery (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) gave Oneonta the second set.
The Red Dragons jumped ahead 8-1 in the third set with Slattery tallying three aces. Oneonta's lead grew to 16-7, and Pugliese knocked in a kill to make it 17-8. Sophomore Sydney Kutz (/) knocked in a kill and ace to make it 24-16, and a final Bobcats' error completed the sweep.
Morretta led the team with ten kills and five blocks, while Landversicht added six kills and two blocks. Kendrick added five kills. Slattery recorded five aces with 11 digs. Tanton dished out 16 assists, and Meltz had 13 digs.
In the second match, Oneonta fell 25-23 in the first set before taking the second and third 25-13 and 25-20. Alfred then closed out with 27-25 and 15-11 set wins.
Pugliese grabbed a career-high 17 kills to lead the Red Dragons, while senior Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) and Morretta had ten kills each. Senior Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior) had three aces and 26 digs. Freshman Layla Pertchik (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) made 28 assists.
Alfred's Gloria Stem had a match-high 26 kills and 17 digs. Gabriella Thurmond made three aces with 47 assists. Ava Wickes made 20 digs.
Oneonta returns to SUNYAC play on Friday, October 31, to play at Buffalo State at 6 p.m.
