COLLEGEVILLE, PA. -- The Oneonta wrestling team traveled to Ursinus College for the North/South Manganaro Duals on Saturday and finished the day 3-1 with victories over Trinity College, Rhode Island College and Southern Maine. The Red Dragons defeated the Bantams 44-5, the Anchormen 37-17, and the Huskies 38-14 to improve to 12-1 in dual matches this season. The team's first loss of the season happened in the opening match against the United States Coast Guard Academy.
Seven Red Dragons picked up three wins on the day as the team combined for 24 wins including 10 falls and three tech falls. Sophomore
Mason Rappold (/) had three first period pins, senior
Jack Ryan (Trumbull, CT/) had three falls, and junior
Avery Leonard (Milford, N.Y./Milford Central) had a first period fall and two tech falls. Seniors
Carson LiCastri (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow High School) and
Kenneth Sauer (Franklin, NY/Franklin), and freshmen
Ryley Monica (Adams, NY/South Jefferson Central) and
Jackson Maby (Susquehanna, PA/Susquehanna Community) were the other four Red Dragons to earn three victories.
Oneonta 44, Trinity 5
Oneonta won nine matches against Trinity with five pins and a tech fall. Maby pinned Ty Trickle, who is ranked sixth in Region One at 133 lbs., in 4:11 at 141 lbs. Leonard recorded a 1:42 fall against Daniel Echeverria at 149 lbs., Rappold scored a 1:56 fall over Austin Edwards at 165 lbs., Sauer defeated Alex Hurly with a pin at 4:48 at 174 lbs., and Ryan had a 1:16 fall over Dylan Sofield. LiCastri beat Booker Lester Jr. in an 18-3 tech fall at 197 lbs.
Senior
Danny Poggi (West Islip, NY/West Islip) got the Red Dragons on the board with a 3-2 decision against Matthew Carrozza at 133 lbs., Monica had a 4-1 decision over Drew Pratt at 157lbs., and junior
Kennith Jackson (New Orleans, LA/) finished the match with a 5-1 decision at 285 lbs. against Emre Sensoy.
Oneonta 37, Rhode Island College 17
The Red Dragons secured eight matches in their dual against the Anchormen. Rappold (165) and Ryan (184) each pinned their opponents in the first period of their matches. Leonard (149) had an 18-0 tech fall in 2:33 over Eli Silverman.
Maby (141) upended Hunter Lundberg in a 13-0 major decision, and Sauer (174) overpowered Juan Rodriguez for a 12-0 major decision. Poggi (133) defeated Brett Redner in an 11-8 sudden victory decision, and Monica (157) beat Oscar Serrano in an 11-4 decision. LiCastri (197) won his match via forfeit.
Oneonta 38, Southern Maine 14
Oneonta closed out the day with seven wins, which included three pins and a tech fall, over Southern Maine. Rappold (165) pinned Derek Cote in 1:23, Ryan (184) recorded a 52-second fall over Scott Ingalls and LiCastri (197) also pinned his opponent, Trevor O'Connor, in 52 seconds. Leonard (149) finished his day with a 17-2 tech fall in 2:12 against Cesar Calderin.
Maby (141), Monica (157), and Sauer (175) all won their matches via decision. Maby beat Kyle Moore 11-5, Monica defeated Kaleb Pool in a narrow 1-0 win, and Sauer earned an 11-7 victory against Tyler Haynes.
The Red Dragons are back in action on Saturday, January 18, for the SUNYAC Championships at SUNY Cortland starting at 9 am.
