ONEONTA, N.Y. - Despite outshooting Susquehanna 15-3, the Oneonta women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to the River Hawks on Sunday afternoon to close the Mayor's Cup. Susquehanna (2-2-0) was the Mayor's Cup champion after going 2-0 on the weekend, while Oneonta fell to 0-2-1.
Oneonta's Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) struck the crossbar in the 16th minute, but the Red Dragons struggled to find many on-goal attempts. Oneonta's defense held Susquehanna to two shots in the first, but their second proved to score when Ava Billmeyer passed back to Amelia Kopp at the top of the box. Kopp took the open shot and found the back of the net in the 42nd minute. The Red Dragons answered with a pair of on-goal shots from Kathryn Doherty and Tara Nicholson (Bayside, NY/Archbishop Molloy), but River Hawks' goalkeeper Katie Henchy made the stops.
Oneonta took six shots in the opening eight minutes, with Henchy saving two to keep the Susquehanna lead. The River Hawks slipped in a second goal when Billmeyer scored at 77:33 to make it 2-0. Junior Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) had a late chance and was one-on-one with the River Hawks' goalkeeper, but Henchy kept the shutout win.
Henchy finished with five saves.
Oneonta next hosts Union on Sat. Sept. 14 at 1 p.m.
