ONEONTA, N.Y. - A scoreless draw loomed on a rainy Saturday afternoon, but Marywood's Caroline Walters netted a goal with under four seconds in the second half to give the Pacers a 1-0 win. Oneonta falls to 0-1-1 following the first day of the Mayor's Cup, while Marywood moves to 3-0-0.
With under ten seconds, Oneonta failed to clear the ball out of their zone. Britlyn Higgins picked up Walters on the left side of the net and slipped the ball past the goalkeeper to take to a final-second win.
The weather played a factor in the game, and neither side found much offense. Junior Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) took an early shot in the first half that was scooped up by Pacers' goalkeeper Jenna Orr. Freshman Sara Kealey (Seaford, NY/General Douglas MacArthur/Levittown) followed with a strong shot that sailed high over the Marywood goal. Red Dragons' goalkeeper Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) stopped a pair of shots from Walters and Riley Mulherin to keep the game scoreless as neither side managed another shot in the first half.
Marywood held a slight 7-4 shot advantage in the second half, and the Red Dragons nearly scored in the 87th minute. Senior Shannon Lowney (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) fired a quick shot into the bottom left that Genevieve Morrison turned aside. Sophomore Gianna Hanner (Ridge, NY/Longwood) collected the rebound and headed the ball back, but the goalie collected the shot.
Marywood responded in the final seconds to grab the win and remain undefeated.
Oneonta next plays Susquehanna on Sun. Sept. 8 at noon to conclude the Mayor's Cup.
