PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team fell in the season opener of the 2024-25 season to Plattsburgh State, 6-1, Monday afternoon. The result moved the Red Dragons to 0-1 overall and in SUNYAC play, while the Cardinals start the year 1-0.
Plattsburgh swept the three doubles matches to win the doubles point. Sophia Gottschall and Megan Phelps defeated freshmen
Jaila Killingbeck (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and
Kyra Murray (Warwick, N.Y.) on the No. 3 court, 6-3, for the Cardinals first point. Junior
Danielle Copp (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) and freshman
Annika Cripe (Islip, N.Y.) battled it out on the No. 1 doubles court against Ava Carey and Jacklin Mitchell, but Carey and Mitchell ended up taking the match, 7-5, and secured the point for Plattsburgh. Junior
Kelly Hayes (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) and freshman
Taylor Plue (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) had a tightly contested match on the No. 2 court, yet the opposing team of Hallie Hurwitz and Kristy Cantwell came away with the match, 7-5.
Junior
Danielle Copp (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) recorded a point for Oneonta in the No. 1 singles match against Carey in an intense match. Carey secured the first set, 6-4, then Copp won the second set, 6-4, to force the third set tiebreaker where Copp defeated Carey 10-7. Plue had a competitive match that went three sets on the No. 2 singles court versus Hurwitz. After falling 5-7 in the first set, Plue won the second set, 6-3 to force the tie-breaking set. Unfortunately, Hurwitz took the final set, 10-6. Plattsburgh took the remaining singles matches in straight sets.
The Red Dragons are back in action on Saturday, September 7, when they travel for the Union Invitational starting at 9 am.
