Oneonta Wraps Up Cougar Classic

DALLAS, PA - The Oneonta women's volleyball team wrapped up the Misericordia Cougar Clash going 0-2 on the day. The Red Dragons (7-10) fell to Hunter (12-4) 3-0 before dropping a 3-0 decision to Misericordia (13-3). For their performances, juniors Gianna May (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) and Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior High School) were named to the Cougar Clash All-Tournament Team.

Hunter swept Oneonta 3-0 in the opening match, going 25-17, 25-22, and 25-17. Junior Gianna May (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) led the Red Dragons with eight kills, while sophomore Keira Welsh (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford High School) added six. Junior Sabrina Squicciarini (Manorville, NY/St. Anthony's) had four kills and two blocks. Freshman Abigail Harper (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) sent in four aces. Freshman Hailey Herrera (Brooklyn, NY/Park Slope Collegiate) had 26 assists, and junior Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior High School) had 12 digs.

Amina Moummad had 11 kills for the Hawks, while Simone McIntyre had ten. Erin Dugan finished with four aces and 13 digs, while Bethany Tomaneng made 29 assists.

Hunter built to a 20-14 lead following a 4-0 run with two kills by Moummad in the first set. Oneonta cut the lead to three points after Harper sent in an ace, but the Hawks closed out on a 5-0 run to take the set. 

The Red Dragons took a 15-14 lead in the second following a Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) kill. Hunter went on a 6-1 span to go ahead 22-17 before a kill from May made it a four-point lead. Oneonta bounced back with a 3-0 run with kills by Welsh and Squicciarini to lead 23-22, but the Hawks answered with two Moummad kills to go up 2-0. 

Following a block from sophomore Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) and Welsh, Oneonta cut the Hunter advantage to 13-12 in the third set. Morretta sent in an ace to tie, but the Hawks used a 4-0 run to go ahead 18-14. Another 6-0 Hunter span pushed the lead to 24-16 as McIntyre tallied the match-winning kill.

Oneonta dropped a 3-0 decision to Misericordia in the second match. The Cougars won 25-10, 25-23, and 25-9.

Sophomore Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) had five kills, while junior Sabrina Squicciarini (Manorville, NY/St. Anthony's) had three. Junior Kate Spano recorded two blocks, while junior Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior High School) grabbed eight digs. Freshman Addison Tanton (/) made 11 assists.

Meghan Peters led Misericordia with ten kills and one block. Cassandra Genduso had nine kills and five aces. Jenna Schuda made 25 assists, and Jessica Cleveland grabbed eight digs.

The Cougars used a 6-1 span in the first set to take a 10-4 lead. Sophomore Keira Welsh (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford High School) knocked in a kill to cut the lead to five, but a 5-0 Misericordia run made it 15-5. Oneonta rattled off three straight points with a kill from Squicciarini, and a Spano block cut the lead to seven. After a Cougars' service error, Misericordia closed the set on a 6-0 to take the first set.

Kills from Keira McCaffrey and Peters gave Misericordia a 15-7 lead in the second set. A 3-0 run with a Spano kill brought the Red Dragons within five. Misericordia took a 22-15 lead following a Gendusa kill and a Cleveland ace. Oneonta followed with a 7-0 run capped off by an ace from junior Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia High School/East Greenbush) to tie 22-22. Morretta knocked in a kill to tie again at 23-23, but the Cougars took the final two points to go up 2-0.

Misericordia opened on a 7-0 run to start the third and led the entire time. The Oneonta offense struggled as the Cougars finished with the sweep.

Oneonta opens SUNYAC play next when they travel to face New Paltz on Wed. Oct. 2 at 5 p.m.
