NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - The New Paltz Hawks swept the Oneonta women's volleyball team 3-0 on Wednesday evening to open SUNYAC play. The Red Dragons fall to 7-11 overall and 0-1 in the conference, while the Hawks move to 7-7 and 1-0 in the SUNYAC.
New Paltz took down Oneonta 25-14, 25-18, and 25-19. Sophomore Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) led the Red Dragons with five kills and two blocks, while freshman McKenna Law (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) added four kills. Junior Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia High School/East Greenbush) tallied three aces, and freshman Hailey Herrera (Brooklyn, NY/Park Slope Collegiate) made 18 assists. Junior Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior High School) grabbed 12 digs.
Maria Weigand led New Paltz with 12 kills, and Jamie Albrecht added 11. Courtney Meyer sent in five aces, and Elena Savage had four and 38 assists. Courtney Meyer tacked on 13 digs.
New Paltz took a 13-3 lead to open the first set before an error and Law kill cut the advantage to eight. Oneonta pulled within seven following a kill from junior Gianna May (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville). The Hawks responded with a 6-0 run with three Weigand kills to go ahead 22-9. May knocked in a kill to spur a 4-0 Red Dragons' run to come within single digits. After freshman Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville) recorded a kill to make it 24-14, Albrecht sent in the set-winning kill.
After New Paltz went ahead 5-0 in the second set, Oneonta used a 4-0 run with three straight Kendrick aces to cut the lead to one point. The Red Dragons stayed close before a 4-0 Hawks run made it 16-8. Morretta tallied a kill, and a New Paltz error cut the lead to six. The Hawks answered with a 4-0 span, slowly building their lead to 24-15. An ace from freshman Zoe Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) cut the lead to 24-17, but New Paltz's Letisha Perez grabbed the final kill.
Oneonta took the lead in the third set with a Morretta kill, making it 9-7. The Red Dragons held off the Hawks, and sophomore Keira Welsh (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford High School) tallied a kill to put Oneonta ahead 13-11. New Paltz scored four consecutive points with two Albrecht aces to regain the lead at 15-13. Oneonta pulled with 23-19 following a Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) kill, but two Red Dragons' errors in the end completed the sweep.
Oneonta next competes on Fri. Oct. 11, when they host Fredonia at 6 p.m. in Dewar Arena.
