ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Fredonia on Friday evening in Dewar Arena. The Blue Devils (9-12, 2-1 SUNYAC) took the first set 25-12, before the Red Dragons (7-12, 0-2 SUNYAC) won the second 26-24. Fredonia wrapped up with 25-20 and 25-23 wins.
Freshman McKenna Law (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) led Oneonta with ten kills and an ace, while junior Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) and sophomore Keira Welsh (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford High School) knocked in eight each. Sophomore Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) had five blocks, and juniors Sabrina Squicciarini (Manorville, NY/St. Anthony's) and Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) tallied two. Freshman Addison Tanton (/) finished with 19 assists and 15 digs. Junior Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia High School/East Greenbush) had a team-high 22 digs.
Fredonia's Kylie O'Brien grabbed a match-high 19 kills, 15 digs, and two aces. Maeve Musielak tallied 11 kills, three aces, and 21 digs. Molly Cassidy finished with three aces and 24 assists.
Fredonia took an 8-2 lead in the first set, with Musielak knocking in three aces. Oneonta struggled to overcome the deficit as the Blue Devils went ahead 19-7. The Red Dragons pulled within ten following a Morretta block. Welsh tallied two straight kills to make it 22-12 before Fredonia finished the set on a 3-0 run.
Oneonta took a close second set after Welsh capped off a 3-0 run with an ace to make it 20-17. O'Brien pulled the Blue Devils within one following a kill, but a bad set and a Law ace made it 24-21. Another 3-0 Fredonia span with two O'Brien kills tied 24-24. Oneonta retook the lead on a Fredonia error, and Kendrick sent in an ace to win the set.
After Oneonta went up 8-4, Fredonia used a 7-1 span capped off with a Molly Cassidy ace to make it 11-9. Law sent in a kill, and Spano blocked an attack to cut the lead to 20-17. The Blue Devils went ahead by six before an Oneonta error gave the Blue Devils the third set.
Fredonia controlled the start of the fourth set, opening with a 9-1 lead. Oneonta chipped back in with kills from Law and Welsh to make it 11-7, and another Welsh kill pulled the Red Dragons within three points. Spano and Law kills tied at 16-16, but Fredonia regained the lead on a 3-0 lead. The Red Dragons used a 6-1 span to take a 22-20 advantage. Fredonia responded with a 4-0 run and took the final set with a Hannah Lombardi kill.
Oneonta next hosts Buffalo State on Sat. Oct. 12 at 1 p.m.
