OSWEGO, N.Y. - Sophomore Emma Parente (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) netted her first-career goal on the way to Oneonta's 2-0 win over Oswego on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons pick up their first win of the season and move to 1-5-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the SUNYAC. The Lakers fall to 4-4-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference.
Oneonta struck two minutes into the first half when Parente intercepted an Oswego pass in the midfield. She cut through a pair of defenders and was one-on-one with the Lakers' goalkeeper, chipping the shot into the bottom left corner of the net.
Oswego countered in the 15th minute when Amber McDermott had three shots, with junior goalkeeper Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) making two saves. Oneonta responded with its second goal in the 20th minute. Senior Shannon Lowney (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) took the corner kick and found senior Kayla Schwizer (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) in front of the net. Schwizer used her height advantage and headed the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
The Dragons' defense held and limited the Lakers to two more shots in the half. At 39:56, Oswego drew a penalty kick, and Emma Rechtorovic lined up for the attempt. Meehan kept the Lakers off the board and made the stop.
Both offenses were limited in the second half, with only five total shots taken. Freshman Kennedy Becker (Croghan, NY/Beaver River Central) fired on-goal at 61:51, but Perri Anderson was there for the save. Oneonta had a few more chances in the final minutes and held on for the shutout victory.
Oswego outshot Oneonta 11-6 and held a 6-3 corner kick advantage. Meehan earned the shutout and had four saves, while Oswego's Anderson had two saves.
