CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Cortland on Wednesday afternoon in SUNYAC action. Oneonta falls to 1-6-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the conference, while Cortland moves to 3-2-4 and 1-0-1 in the SUNYAC.
The Cortland offense rattled off six shots in the opening 17 minutes, with junior goalkeeper Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) making four saves. Sophomore Keira Dashnow (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) tallied shots in the 25th and 27th minutes that sailed wide. Sophomore Katie Doherty (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) shot on goal at 33:33, but Cortland goalie Kristen Spendal turned the ball aside.
Cortland broke through in the 38th minute when Julia DeTurris headed the ball off a Katie Diem free kick into the top left corner to go up 1-0.
Cortland continued the pressure by taking three on-goal shots in the 52nd minute that Meehan saved. Cam Stone scored off a corner kick in the 67th minute to push the lead to 2-0. Oneonta responded at 78:04 when junior Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) passed to Dashnow in front of the Cortland net. Dashnow chipped the ball into the top right corner to make it 2-1.
Cortland controlled the ball in the final minutes to secure the win.
Meehan finished with ten saves in goal, while Spendal had two.
Oneonta will travel next to face Potsdam on Saturday. Oct. 5 at 2 p.m.
