ONEONTA, N.Y. - After being down 1-0 at halftime, the Oneonta men's soccer team scored two second-half goals to pick up a 2-1 win over Oswego on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 5-1-3 overall and 1-0-0 in the SUNYAC. The Lakers fall to 5-1-2 and 0-1-0 in the conference.
Oneonta controlled the early minutes by taking three shots in four minutes. After a foul in the Oneonta zone, Oswego's Kyle Gehnrich took a free kick. He struck the ball in front of the net, where Scout McCumiskey slipped it past the Oneonta goalkeeper to make it 1-0 at 11:09.
Senior Ali Somow (Utica, N.Y./Proctor) responded by attacking from the right side and was one-on-one with goalkeeper Kyle Rose. Somow fired low and right, but Rose collected the ball. Following an Oneonta yellow card, Somow once again had a scoring opportunity at 24:39. He fired a hard shot straight into the goalkeeper that kept the Red Dragons off the board. Oneonta mustered one more shot in the half and held Oswego without a shot.
In the 57th minute, senior Owen Siegel (Liberty, N.Y./Liberty) played the thru ball from midfield to senior Luigi Prosperi (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) in the attacking zone. Prosperi fired a shot into the top right corner to level the game 1-1.
McCumiskey responded with a shot on goal at 63:03, but junior goalie AJ Lucas (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) turned it aside. Lucas made another pair of saves to keep the game tied. Oneonta scored again in a similar fashion when senior Nate Masucci (Greece, N.Y./Greece Athena) launched the ball from midfield to Somow, who found the back of the net from five yards out in the 81st minute. Oswego added shots from Hajoon Lee and Kyle Hanner, which Lucas saved in the final minutes.
Oneonta outshot Oswego 18-10, and corner kicks were tied 4-4. Lucas finished with seven saves, while Rose had eight.
Oneonta next hosts Cortland on Wed. Oct. 2 at 4 p.m.
