Oneonta Falls to Sage in Four Sets

ALBANY, N.Y. - After taking the first set 30-28, the Oneonta women's volleyball team fell 25-16, 25-23, and 25-15 to lose 3-1 to Sage College on Friday evening. The Red Dragons fall to 5-4 overall, while the Gators move to 6-3.

Freshman McKenna Law (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) and junior Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) led the way for Oneonta with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Spano added three blocks. Freshman Hailey Herrera (Brooklyn, NY/Park Slope Collegiate) dished out 40 assists, while freshman Zoe Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) grabbed 11 digs and two aces.

Sage's Macey Salvione recorded a match-high 17 kills and nine aces, while Aniyah Kelley added 12 kills. Emma Rainville tallied 44 assists, and Katelyn Atchinson finished with 15 digs.

After Sage took a 24-20 lead in the first set following three kills from Salvione, Oneonta fought back with a 4-0 run to tie. The teams traded leads until the Gators led 28-27 after a Kelley kill. Spano sent in a kill to tie, and junior Sabrina Squicciarini (Manorville, NY/St. Anthony's) knocked in two straight kills to take the first set.

A 9-0 Sage run in the second set pushed the Gators' advantage to 15-8. Oneonta pulled with four points, but six straight Sage points pushed the lead to 23-13. Kelley finished the set victory with a kill.

After some solid Sage runs in the third set, the Red Dragons cut the lead to two points following a 3-0 span with kills from Law and Spano. Salvione sealed the set with a kill to lead 2-1.

Sage led by as much as nine in the fourth set and held a comfortable lead. The Gators closed out taking four of the final five points, with Caitlin Hammecker securing the match victory on an ace.
