ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's soccer team scored midway through the first half, but an 85th-minute goal from Hartwick led to a 1-1 tie in Friday's season opener. Both teams now stand at 0-0-1 on the season.
Oneonta controlled the tempo early in the first half, and senior Shannon Lowney (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) shot on goal at 4:50. Junior Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) followed with an on-goal attempt at 11:48, but Hartwick's Meghan Perry turned the shot away. Senior Kayla Schwizer (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) struck the crossbar after a corner kick in the 24th minute. Ring collected the rebound and found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead at 25:16. The Red Dragons defense held the Hawks to one total shot the entire first half.
Freshman Maria Stamatopoulos (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) fired on-goal shots in the 46th and 48th minutes that Perry turned aside. Hartwick's Grace Byrne gave the Hawks their first shot on goal at 49:54, but junior goalkeeper Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) made the stop.
Hartwick applied more pressure on the Oneonta defense with three more shots in a four-minute span.
In the 84th minute, Hartwick had back-to-back corner kicks, and Stella Rowley capitalized with the late goal to tie at 85:14. Lowney mustered up one final shot, but the game ended in a draw.
Oneonta out shot Hartwick 19-9 and held an 8-4 corner kick advantage.
Meehan finished with three saves, while Perry had eight.
Oneonta next hosts the annual Mayor's Cup Tournament on Sat. Sept. 7 against Marywood at noon.
