ALBANY, N.Y. -- SUNY Oneonta wrestling senior
Anderson Klosner (Ilion/Central Valley Academy) was named the SUNY Scholar Athlete Award winner for men's wrestling. The SUNY Winter Scholar Athlete Awards recognized 21 student-athletes, including nine SUNYAC student-athletes, from SUNY colleges and universities sponsoring intercollegiate athletics at the four- and two-year levels who were nominated and voted upon by representatives of their respective institutions.
Nominating information includes cumulative grade point average, current and career statistics, and athletic and academic honors. More than 14,000 student-athletes compete at SUNY institutions representing 53 different colleges and universities at the NCAA Division I, NCAA Division III/USCAA and NJCAA levels and are eligible for the awards. The SUNY Scholar Athlete Awards recognize outstanding academic and athletic success in 29 different sports in the fall, winter and spring seasons.
"I want to congratulate Anderson on earning this award," said Athletic Director Ryan Hooper. "To excel in the classroom and in a sport, such as wrestling, takes a tremendous amount of dedication. It's apparent all the work that Anderson has put into his academics and the wrestling program. He exemplifies what it means to be a Red Dragon and an exemplary scholar athlete. I couldn't be happier for him on this award."
Klosner has a 3.89 cumulative GPA as an adolescent education major and was named the SUNYAC Men's Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year earlier this offseason. The Ilion, N.Y. native received the SUNYAC Elite 20 award for being the individual with the highest GPA at the conference championship this year. Klosner placed fifth in the 149-weight class at the 2024 league championship meet and finished the 2023-24 season with 11 wins including three falls and one tech fall.
"Andy is an exceptional young man who is extremely hardworking, intelligent, loyal, and dedicated," said Head Coach
Duane Ritter. "He has overcome a great deal of adversity along his collegiate journey yet continues to excel both on and off the mat as a role model, co-captain, and inspirational team leader."
"His accolades are extensive including All-Conference in SUNYAC, multiple time All-Academic Team Selections in both ECWC & SUNYAC Commissioner Honor Roll, Dean's List, Provost List, SUNYAC Elite 20 Award Winner, Susan Sutton Smith Award, 2024 Chi-Alpha-Sigma Inductee, and much more," Coach Ritter continued. "Andy has been a great mentor, having participated in and helped lead many team community service projects, served as an OPRO Leader for the past two seasons and a member of SAAC program. We are all extremely proud of your achievements Andy as well as your positive representation of our wrestling program and SUNY Oneonta."
