PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team flew past Plattsburgh State in game one, 7-1, then held the Cardinals to two hits in game two for a 7-0 shutout victory, Friday afternoon. The SUNYAC doubleheader sweep improved the Red Dragons to 10-14 on the season, 4-4 in SUNYAC play, and the Cardinals dropped to 7-17 overall and 1-7 in the conference. Senior
Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) and freshman
Ella Stewart (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) each recorded two hits in both games, Cancelleri also had an RBI, scored twice, and stole three bases, while Stewart totaled two RBI, one run, and a stolen base. Senior
Delaney Haley (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) finished 3-for-6 with two RBI, one run, and two stolen bases.
Game One: Oneonta 7, Plattsburgh 1
Haley showcased her speed reaching first off a bunt, stole second, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Junior
Julia Serena (White Plains, N.Y./Valhalla) worked a walk and had a successful double steal attempt with Haley for the first run of the game. Stewart hit a two-out single up the middle to score Serena for a 2-0 lead.
Fiori worked a one-out walk in the top of the third before Serena belted a two-run shot over left centerfield, her fifth home run of the season, to go up 4-0.
Plattsburgh scored their only run in the bottom of the fifth off a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Oneonta gained their final three runs in the top of the sixth. Serena reached second on a dropped ball by a Cardinal's outfielder then junior
Sophia Mangone (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) walked, allowing senior
Sarah Paige (Fort Ann, N.Y./Fort Ann Central) and freshman
Maya Nelsen (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay Cross River) to become pinch-runners. Stewart hit a blooper that dropped into shallow center field to bring Paige home. The Red Dragons had another double steal attempt where the Cardinal catcher threw the ball and bounced away from the second baseman allowing Nelsen to score and Stewart to head to third. Stewart touched home for the final run of game one on a groundout.
Serena finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and scored two runs, Stewart went 2-for-3 with two RBI and scored a run.
Senior
Marissa Dionisio (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (2-6) earned the win, pitching 5.0 innings, striking out two, allowing one run on three hits. Sophomore
Anna Torgersen (Chester, NJ/Mendham) came in to relieve Dionisio, pitched the final 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and two walks.
Morgan Ormerod (4-4) pitched the complete game for Plattsburgh, struck out three, and allowed seven runs, five earned, on seven hits.

In the first inning of game two, Mangone brought senior
Adriana Fiori (Newtown, CT/Brookfield) home from second with a single up the middle to take a 1-0 lead.
Freshman
Emily Brown (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) landed one perfectly between the outfielders and second baseman for a single, then Cancelleri beat out a throw for an infield single to shortstop to get runners on the corners. Senior
Sara Cartier (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) came in to pinch-hit with two outs on a 1-0 count and hit a triple over the right-fielder's head to score both runners for a 3-0 advantage.
The Red Dragons put together a two-out rally in the fourth inning and added two more runs to go up 5-0. Freshman
Ava Thys (Fairfax, Va./James W. Robinson Secondary (Va.)) lined a one-hopper into the outfield for a single then Cancelleri singled to left center to advance Thys to third. Haley hit an infield single to second base that brought Thys home, then got caught in a rundown to give Cancelleri time to slide home safely and for her to advance to second.
Oneonta tallied the last two runs in the sixth inning. Senior
Victoria Hussey (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) was a few feet away from a home run as she hit the left field fence for a stand-up double. Thys hit a single past the pitcher's glove to score Hussey, reached second on the throw home, then advanced to third on an obstruction call. Cancelleri brought Thys across home on a grounder for the final run of the game.
Haley ended game two 2-for-3 with two RBI, Cartier was 1-for-1 with a two-run triple, and Mangone went 1-for-1 with an RBI. Thys and Cancelleri both went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and scored twice, Cancelleri also tallied two stolen bases.
Brown (4-5) pitched the complete game and struck out seven batters in the win, surrendering only two hits and four walks.
Julia Golino (2-6) received the loss after going the full game for the Cardinals, striking out two, allowing seven runs on 14 hits.
The Red Dragons next doubleheader is Saturday, April 20, at Potsdam starting at noon.
