POTSDAM, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team combined for 26 runs and 33 hits in their doubleheader sweep on the road against Potsdam, Saturday afternoon. Oneonta defeated Potsdam in game one, 12-5, then won game two by mercy rule in six innings, 14-2. Junior
Julia Serena (White Plains, N.Y./Valhalla) finished the twin bill 6-for-9 with a home run, seven RBI, and scored three runs. Freshman
Emily Brown (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) went 4-for-10 at the plate, scored twice, and threw a complete game in game two where she struck out seven and allowed two unearned runs. The Red Dragons improved to 12-14 on the season, 6-4 in the SUNYAC, while the Bears dropped to 9-13 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
Game 1: Oneonta 12, Potsdam 5
Senior
Delaney Haley (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) reached on an infield single and scored on an error in the first inning. Oneonta added three more runs, all off singles, in the top of the third. Senior
Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) was on third with one out when senior
Adriana Fiori (Newtown, CT/Brookfield) singled to right field and scored Cancelleri while she advanced to second on the throw home. After Serena singled to left, freshman
Ella Stewart (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) poked one through the left side to bring Fiori home and move Serena to third. Senior
Victoria Hussey (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) hit the final RBI-single towards Potsdam's diving shortstop who couldn't make a play to first as Serena crossed home to go up 4-0.
Potsdam had a rally of singles in the bottom half of the third inning to take a 5-4 lead, however Oneonta regained the lead with three runs in the fourth then another five in the fifth to go ahead 12-5. Serena crushed the go-ahead three-run home run to left field in the fourth for her sixth home run of the season. Senior
Sara Cartier (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) lined an RBI double over the shortstop's head to the left field fence. The Red Dragons loaded the bases for Fiori to hit a one-hopper to the third baseman for an infield RBI single. Following a team mound visit, Serena smashed a double over the right fielder to score two more runs. Stewart brought Fiori, the final run of the game, home with a single that dropped into shallow center field.
Serena was a triple shy from the cycle, finishing 4-for-5 with five RBI. Fiori and Stewart each went 2-for-5 with two RBI, Fiori also scored three times while Stewart stole two bases. Haley and Hussey were both 2-for-4, Haley reached home three times, and Hussey had an RBI and a run scored.
Senior
Marissa Dionisio (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) started the game for Oneonta, pitched 2.0 innings, and allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits. Sophomore
Anna Torgersen (Chester, NJ/Mendham) (2-1) received the win as the relief pitcher, pitching 5.0 innings, striking out one, allowing two runs on three hits.
Lexie Cottrill (4-6) was tagged with the loss after pitching 4.1 innings, allowing 12 runs, eight earned, on 13 hits. Hannah Agans came in for the final 2.2 innings, struck out one and allowed three hits.
Game Two: Oneonta 14, Potsdam 2 (6 Innings)
It was all Red Dragons in game two as they went on a 9-0 run through four innings of play. Haley stole second and third in the first inning to score off a sacrifice fly from Fiori. Oneonta went up two by the end of the first inning when Stewart singled up the middle and had her ball roll off the center fielder's glove to allow Brown to cross home. Cancelleri started a three-run, two-out, rally in the second with a single. Sophomore
Jaime Cardello (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) hit a double that bounced over third base down the left field line to score Cancelleri. Fiori lined a single past the pitcher to bring home Haley, who replaced Cardello at second. Serena had a four-pitch walk then immediately rounded towards second to get caught in a rundown and allowed Fiori to run home to end the inning. The Red Dragons capped off the stretch with four runs in the fourth. Haley slapped hit a single on a full count then ran for an uncontested second base to allow Cancelleri to slide home. Serena brought Haley home with a double that landed in the warning track of left field. Stewart hit the ball just outside the reach of the second baseman for an RBI single, then freshman
Maya Nelsen (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay Cross River) scored on a fielder's choice for the 9-0 lead.
The Bears scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth. With two runners on and two outs, Kelsey Bennett hit a single to left field that scored one after the cut-off throw sailed a little high and away from the senior Red Dragon catcher,
Aysia Oliver (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood). Potsdam scored their second run in the next at-bat off a wild pitch.
Oneonta put together six hits in the sixth inning and scored five runs to go up 14-2. Cartier hit a stand-up two-RBI double to center field. Sophomore
Abigail Silliman (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia) connected for an RBI single to center then advanced to second on the throw home. With Cancelleri and Silliman on second and third, Fiori hit one past a diving second baseman for an RBI single, then Fiori scored the Cancelleri for the final run of the game with a single through the left side gap.
Stewart went 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored once. Cartier and Serena each finished game two 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Fiori was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run, while Cancelleri and Haley each had two hits, scored three times, and stole two bases. Brown's complete game, seven-strikeout, performance improved her to 4-5 on the season.
Sierra Ashley (3-4) received the loss, pitched 3.1 innings, and allowed eight runs, seven earned on 10 hits. Anna Brown pitched 2.2 innings, struck out one, and allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits.
