Softball Takes Doubleheader at Union, Haley Sits atop Program’s Stolen Base Records

Serena Records 100th-Career RBI as Red Dragons Win Sixth Straight on Road

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team continued their hot streak and defeated Union College in a twin bill on the road, 3-0 and 11-5, while senior Delaney Haley (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) broke two program records, Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons have won eight of the past 10, their last six straight, and improved to 14-14 on the season and the Garnet Chargers dropped to 6-18 overall. Haley finished the day 5-for-8 with an RBI, scored five runs, and stole three bases. With the three stolen bases, Haley has recorded 25 this season for the single season program record and has totaled 55 in her career for another Red Dragon Softball record. Both records were previously held by Bethany Traux '10.

Junior Julia Serena (White Plains, N.Y./Valhalla) went 2-for-4 with a home run and totaled five RBI in game two, surpassing 100 career RBI. She is one of five Red Dragons to record 100+ RBI, is currently tied for fourth with Dana Del Genio '19 at 103, and is 11 away from Katie O'Gorman's '17 career record (114).

Game One: Oneonta 3, Union 0
Freshman Emily Brown (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) imposed a problem in game one for Union, both in the circle and in the batter's box. Brown (6-5) went 5 2/3 innings without allowing a hit and matched her career-high nine strikeouts as she threw the complete game shutout allowing only two hits and six walks. It is the fourth straight complete game she has thrown, fourth straight appearance without allowing an earned run, and second shutout of the season.

Offensively, Brown went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. She hit a single in the top of the fifth that tipped off the glove of the shortstop to bring Haley home for the 3-0 final. Oneonta scored their first two runs in the first inning when Haley scored on a wild pitch, then senior Adriana Fiori (Newtown, CT/Brookfield) crossed home while Brown stole second.

Haley went 2-for-4 and scored twice in game one, freshman Ella Stewart (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) was 1-for-3, and sophomore Abigail Silliman (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia) finished 1-for-2 with a walk.

Autumn Duff (1-8) was tagged with the loss for the Garnet Chargers after pitching the full game with three strikeouts, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits and four walks.

Game Two: Oneonta 11, Union 5
Haley beat out a throw from the second baseman for a single in the first inning then stole second for the program's stolen base records. Serena brought Haley home and gave Oneonta a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly. Union tied it with an RBI single from Ellie Wintringer in the bottom half of the first.

The Red Dragons regained the edge in the second inning when Stewart touched home on a dropped infield fly ball. Both Fiori and Stewart scored off a couple Garnet Charger errors in the third inning, then Silliman scored on a groundout in the fourth to go up 5-1.

Union got to within one run, 5-4, after an RBI single by Maddy Ewald in the fourth and a two-run single to left center by Haley Gibbons in the fifth.

Oneonta closed the game out with three runs apiece in the sixth and seventh innings. After senior Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) reached first on a single and stole second, Haley hit a dribbler past the third baseman's glove into left field for an RBI double that scored Cancelleri. Serena recorded her 100th RBI with a hard-hit single that went off the third baseman's leg and into the air. Senior Sarah Paige (Fort Ann, N.Y./Fort Ann Central) pinch-ran for Serena and came home from second off a worm burner hit to left field by Stewart for an 8-4 lead.

Cancelleri and Haley reached base on back-to-back bunts before Serena blasted a three-run home run over left field in the seventh inning to go up 11-4. The home run was her seventh of the season and 19th career. Serena has recorded a home run in six of the past seven doubleheaders and five in the last 10 games. Union tallied one run in their final three outs on a single by Sam Rose as Oneonta held on to the win.

Haley and Stewart each finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Cancelleri, Silliman, and Serena all recorded two hits.

Junior Angelina Scalere (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) (2-0) earned the win, relief pitching for 2.2 innings picking up two strike outs, and allowing two runs on three hits. Sophomore Anna Torgersen (Chester, NJ/Mendham) started the game for 3.1 innings, struck out one, and allowed two runs on five hits. Junior Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) pitched the final inning, struck out one, and allowed one run on three hits.

Melody Kappel (3-9) received the loss after pitching 3.0 innings, striking out one, and allowing five runs, two earned, on four hits. Riley Callahan pitched 4.0 innings and allowed six runs on 10 hits.

Oneonta has their final home SUNYAC weekend of the season this Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27, against Fredonia and Buffalo State in Morgan's Message Game. The Red Dragons are fifth in the SUNYAC standings with a 6-4 record (12 points), the Blue Devils are 6-6 (12 points) and the Bengals are third in the conference at 8-4 (16 points). First pitch against Fredonia on Friday is at 3 pm.
