NEWBERG, OR. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team fell in a doubleheader against George Fox, Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons dropped game one, 9-5, game two, 6-5, and moved to 3-7 on the season, while the Bruins improved to 7-5 overall. Senior
Adriana Fiori (Newtown, CT/Brookfield) finished 3-for-5 on the day with an RBI and scored four runs, and senior
Delaney Haley (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) went 3-for-6 with two RBI with a run scored. Junior
Sophia Mangone (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) was 4-for-6 with one RBI in the twin bill, and juniorÂ
Julia Serena (White Plains, N.Y./Valhalla) had two hits and three RBI in game two.
Game 1: Oneonta 5, George Fox 9
Oneonta loaded the bases with no outs in the first when freshman
Emily Brown (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) singled, Fiori bunted for a single, and senior
Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) got hit by a pitch. Haley knocked in Brown and Fiori with a poke down the right field line for a 2-0 edge.
George Fox gained a 4-2 lead in the fourth off three singles and a sacrifice fly.
In the top of the fifth with Fiori on third, Cancelleri bunted down the first baseline for a single then turned the corner to head towards second. She got caught in a quick pickle which allowed Fiori to score as Cancelleri safely reached second on a throw to home.
The Red Dragons took a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth. Mangone singled to center and had senior
Sara Cartier (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) pinch run. With one out, Cartier stole second then advanced to third as the throw went into the outfield. After freshman
Ella Stewart (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) worked a walk then stole second, Brown lined a single to right that scored Cartier and moved Stewart to third. Fiori, on a 3-2 count, hit one into center field and scored Stewart.
The Bruins pulled away with game-one with a four-run sixth inning then retired the side in the top of the seventh.
Haley was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Mangone went 2-for-3. Brown and Fiori both recorded two hits, an RBI, and scored a run.
Sophomore
Anna Torgersen (Chester, NJ/Mendham) (0-1) was tagged with the loss after pitching 2.0 innings, allowing three runs on one hit and one walk. Junior
Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) started the game, pitched 3.1 innings, struck out one, and allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits. Junior
Angelina Scalere (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) pitched the final 0.2 innings and allowed two runs off one hit and two walks.
Madelyn Loughary (1-0) received the win after pitching 0.2 innings, allowing only a hit. Emma Eastman started the first 5.1 innings for George Fox, struck out four, and allowed five runs off nine hits.
Game 2: Oneonta 5, George Fox 6
The Bruins took a 1-0 edge in the first inning off a double from Sydney Sandifer. The Red Dragons gained a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning. Stewart led off the third with a single that bounced off second base and into the outfield. Fiori hit a single that dropped into shallow right field, and advanced to second while Stewart beat out the throw to third. Serena knocked in both Stewart and Fiori with a double that bounced to the left center field fence.
George Fox tied it in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly where Haley made a diving effort for the catch. Oneonta went back ahead, 4-2, with two runs in the fifth. Serena smacked one over the right fielder's head for a double and scored Haley, then Mangone roped a double to right field to bring home pinch-runner, freshman
Maya Nelsen (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay Cross River).
The Bruins got one run back in the fifth on an infield groundout, then tied it in the sixth off a solo home run by Sandifer.
Oneonta regained a one-run lead in the seventh when Serena hit a high fly ball that dropped out of the left fielders glove and scored Fiori. George Fox was down to their final out with a runner on first when Makayla Noone hit one to the outfield and had the ball rolled past the outfielder, to the fence, for both the first baserunner and Noone to score for the 6-5 win.
Serena went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Mangone finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Brown (1-3) was tabbed with the loss after pitching in the final inning, allowing two runs, one earned on a hit and a walk. Senior
Marissa Dionisio (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) started the game, pitched 4.2 innings, and allowed three runs on four hits. Brennan pitched an inning and allowed one run on a hit.
Kiley Harris (2-1) received the win, after 2.1 innings of relief pitching, struck out one, and allowed one run on one hit and a walk. Elise Wilkinson started for the Bruins, pitched 4.2 innings, and allowed four runs on nine hits.
The Red Dragons are back in action Monday, March 18, to wrap up their northwest play in a doubleheader against Puget Sound at 3 pm EST.
