Red Dragons Finish Spring Trip with Split Against Loggers

TACOMA, WA. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team won their last game of the northwest trip and split their doubleheader against Puget Sound, Monday afternoon. The Loggers took game one, 3-2, before the Red Dragons secured game two, 5-3, as both teams improved to 4-8 on the season. Junior Julia Serena (White Plains, N.Y./Valhalla) finished 3-for-4, including a two-run home run, with three RBI and two walks, and senior Delaney Haley (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) went 3-for-6 with two runs.

Game 1: Oneonta 2, Puget Sound 3
Game one was scoreless until Puget Sound put up three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Kimora Phillips hit an RBI-single and Aislinn O'Reilly doubled to right field to score the other two runs.

In the top of the sixth with two outs, Haley laid down a bunt to beat out the throw to first, then ran to an uncovered second base once the pitcher received the ball and turned away from her. Serena connected on the first pitch she saw and blasted a two-run home run over the left field wall.

The Loggers recorded four straight outs against the last Red Dragon batters to hold onto game one.

Senior Marissa Dionisio (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (0-4) was tagged with the loss and pitched 4.2 innings, struck out two, and allowed three runs on six hits. Sophomore Anna Torgersen (Chester, NJ/Mendham) pitched 1.1 innings, struck out one, and allowed a hit.

Nyomi Estrada (2-1) pitched the complete game, struck out 11, and allowed two runs on four hits.

Game 2: Oneonta 5, Puget Sound 3
Puget Sound scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning. The first run came off an Oneonta error then Abby Pearce hit a two-run home run.

The Red Dragons gained two runs back in the top of the third. Senior Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) hustled out an infield ground for a single, then, similar to Haley in game one, sprinted for second base once the pitcher received the ball. Cancelleri stole third before sophomore Cailin Hall (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) smacked one into right field for an RBI single and replaced Cancelleri at third after an error by the Loggers right fielder. Junior Sophia Mangone (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) brought Hall home with a single up the middle.

Haley laid down a bunt with one out in the top of the fifth and advanced to third after the catcher overthrew the first baseman. Haley tied the game, 3-3, off a Serena single that bounced off the pitcher's foot.

In the top of the sixth, senior Adriana Fiori (Newtown, CT/Brookfield) singled through the right side and scored senior Sara Cartier (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) to give Oneonta a 4-3 lead. In the final inning, senior Victoria Hussey (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) hit a one-hopper to third base for a single, then scored off sophomore Jaime Cardello's (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) single to center field. The Red Dragons retired the side to secure the win.

Nine different Red Dragons recorded a hit in game two. Hussey finished 3-for-4 and scored a run, while Haley went 2-for-3 with a run.

Freshman Emily Brown (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) (2-3) received the win after she pitched 5.1 innings, struck out a career-high eight batters, and allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits. Junior Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) (2) picked up the save, pitched the final 1.2 innings, struck out one, and allowed one hit.

O'Reilly (0-3) received the loss after pitching 6.0 innings, striking out two, and allowing five runs, four earned, off 11 hits.

The Red Dragons return to New York but remain on the road for their next doubleheader on Saturday, March 23, against Skidmore starting at 12 pm.
