LA CROSSE, WI. -- Junior SUNY Oneonta wrestler
Jack Ryan (Trumbull, CT/) received All-American status at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at La Crosse Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin, this weekend. Ryan entered the tournament as the No. 8 seed and finished 3-2 with two major decisions for a seventh-place finish at 184 pounds. He is the 15th Red Dragon in program history to be named All-American, the first since James Bethel in 2019.
The Trumbull, Connecticut native drew Messiah's Ryder Slayton in the first round. In an orthodox match, Ryan scored a takedown 30 seconds in with a slide by to a rear leg attack and gained just over a minute of riding time before Slayton escaped. Ryan escaped from Slayton at the beginning of the second for a 4-1 advantage going into the final period. Ryan gained another 45 seconds of riding time in the third and brushed off Slayton's last-ditch attempts at a takedown for the 5-2 decision.
Ryan faced the bracket's No. 1 seed in the next round, Augsburg's Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann. Schwanebeck-Ostermann won a 16-1 tech fall to move Ryan into the consolation bracket, and went on to win the 184-pound class.
In his first consolation bout, Ryan went up against Cornell College's (Iowa) Cael McLaren and defeated him in a 12-3 major decision, clinching All-American honors. He gained control of McLaren's left leg twice in the first period to record two takedowns and gained 1:30 of riding time for a 6-1 lead. Both wrestlers were called for stalling in the scoreless second period. Ryan escaped at the start of the third period then gained control of one of McLaren's wrists and snapped him down for another takedown. Ryan was penalized for stalling but gained the point back with over three minutes of riding time.
Ryan had a Mideast Regional Championship rematch in the consolation quarterfinals against No. 5 seed, Alfred State's Sean Malenfant, but came up short, 4-2. The first round remained scoreless as neither wrestler could get the advantage over the other. Malenfant scored an escape in the second before Ryan scored his in the third. With 1:26 remaining, Malenfant grabbed Ryan's right leg and got him off-balanced for a takedown, Ryan escaped 20 seconds later. Ryan had a couple opportunities at the end for a takedown. He tried off a reset with 21 seconds left, but Malenfant backed away, then in the final 10 seconds, he dove at Malenfant, wrapped his arms around his waist and lifted him off the ground, but Malenfant used his hand to take the initial impact of the fall, then his head, and shifted his body on top of Ryan to keep the control neutral.
The first time All-American closed out the National Tournament in the seventh-place match with another Mideast Regional rematch, this time against Ursinus' Max Borton. Similar to the last time they faced each other (Ryan by major decision, 9-0, in Mideast Semifinals), he defeated Borton again by major decision, 8-0. Ryan hooked his arms around Borton's left arm and leg to bring him down for a takedown 45 seconds into the first period. A minute into the second period, Ryan lifted Borton's legs to get him upside down, but Borton grabbed Ryan's ankle at the same time and brought him to the ground too. Ryan managed to slip his ankle out of Borton's grip 30 seconds later and got on top of him to score his second takedown. Ryan chose bottom to start the final period and kept his stomach on the mat until Borton allowed him to get up with 22 seconds left. Ryan fought off his opponent's final takedown attempts and gained the riding time bonus.
Ryan finished the year 31-5 with 15 pins, three tech falls and eight major decisions. He is now an All-American, a two-time NCAA National Tournament qualifier, two-time NCAA Mideast All-Region, All-SUNYAC and 184 class SUNYAC Tournament Champion.
