Serena Records 100th Career Hit

FOREST GROVE/MCMINNVILLE, OR. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team swept a doubleheader against Pacific University before dropping two games to No. 3 nationally ranked Linfield University as their northwest spring break play continued, Wednesday and Thursday. The Red Dragons defeated the Boxers, 4-2 and 5-3, with multiple late inning runs, and fell to the Wildcats, 8-1 and 14-0, in five innings. Oneonta moved to 3-5 on the season, Pacific dropped to 6-10, and Linfield improved to 6-0 overall. Junior Julia Serena (White Plains, N.Y./Valhalla) was 4-for-6 with two RBI, two doubles, and a walk against Pacific and freshman Ava Thys (Fairfax, Va./James W. Robinson Secondary (Va.)) went 3-for-5 with two RBI and scored a run versus the Boxers.

Game 1: Oneonta 4, Pacific 2
In the first inning, Serena hit a double to the right center fence for her 100th career hit.

Thys got Oneonta on the board in the second inning with a two-RBI single to right field, after freshman Ella Stewart (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) walked and senior Aysia Oliver (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) singled to get into scoring position. Pacific tied it in the fourth off back-to-back hits from Faith Lawson and Rylie Kihara.

In the top of the sixth, Serena doubled to left field and senior Sarah Paige (Fort Ann, N.Y./Fort Ann Central) came in to pinch run. Paige stole third, then went for home on a double steal attempt with Stewart to go ahead 3-2. Junior Sophia Mangone (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) put the Red Dragons up two in the seventh with a two-out single to right field. The Boxers had runners on first and second with one out in the seventh when Chloe Knepp hit a ground ball to the senior third baseman Victoria Hussey (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) who touched third and threw out Knepp at first for the game-ending double play.

Thys finished 1-for-2 with two RBI, Serena was 2-for-3 with two doubles, and Oliver went 1-for-2 and scored a run. Stewart worked two walks, stole a base and scored once.

Junior Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) (1-0) came in for relief and pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, struck out one and allowed three hits for the win. Freshman Emily Brown (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) started, pitched 3.1 innings, struck out three, and allowed two runs off five hits.

Pacific tied it on a Carli Zanassi single to center, then regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a Winfield RBI-single.

The Red Dragons were down to their final two outs before they put together a three-run rally for the win. Sophomore Jaime Cardello (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) reached on an error and had Paige pinch run for her. Paige stole second and reached third when Thys singled to right field. Fiori hit another single to right that scored Paige and moved Thys over to third. Thys and Fiori both scored with two outs after the Boxers shortstop allowed sophomore Cailin Hall's (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) hard-hit ball to go up her arm and into the outfield, giving Oneonta a 5-3 lead.
