Red Dragons Start Spring Break with Split Against Pioneers

PORTLAND, OR. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team split the first doubleheader of their spring break trip in Oregon against Lewis & Clark College, Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons dropped game one, 8-3, before they won game two, 5-4, and improved to 1-3 on the season while the Pioneers moved to 9-5 overall. Freshman Ella Stewart (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) went 3-for-3 in game two with an RBI and two runs scored, and freshman Emily Brown (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) (1-1) pitched 4.0 innings, struck out three, and allowed two runs to earn her first win as a Red Dragon.

Game 1: Lewis & Clark 8, Oneonta 3
Senior Delaney Haley (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) scored the first run of game one on a wild pitch, however Lewis & Clark's Sam Gildersleeve hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. The Pioneers added two more to their lead in the second with a couple of bases-loaded walks.

Senior Adriana Fiori (Newtown, CT/Brookfield) bunted for a single in the top of the fifth, stole second, then scored on a passed ball. Lewis & Clark answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to go up 8-2. Oneonta scored their final run in the sixth when sophomore Jaime Cardello (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) came in to pinch hit and doubled to right center to score senior Sara Cartier (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse).

Senior Marissa Dionisio (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (0-2) was tagged with the loss after she pitched 1.1 innings, struck out one, and allowed five runs, three earned, off three hits. Junior Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) pitched 3.0 innings, struck out three and allowed three runs, and junior Angelina Scalere (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) pitched 1.2 innings and struck out two.

Ryan Jurischk (1-0) pitched 4.0 innings, struck out one, and allowed two unearned runs as she received the win.

Game 2: Oneonta 5, Lewis & Clark 4
The Red Dragons recorded three runs in the first inning of game two for the early lead. Senior Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) led the game off with a walk then stole second. Haley had an entertaining déjà vu moment during her plate appearance as she laid down a bunt and made it to second, however the Lewis & Clark coach challenged that she was out of the batter's box when she made contact, and she had to return to the plate. On the next pitch she bunted in the same spot and reached second base again while Cancelleri advanced to third. Serena hit a sacrifice fly to center that knocked in Cancelleri, then senior Victoria Hussey (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) doubled to shallow centerfield to bring in Haley. Stewart's first collegiate hit was a single up the middle that bounced off the pitcher's glove and scored Hussey.

Stewart started the fourth inning with a double to right center, then stole home in a double steal attempt with sophomore Cailin Hall (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) to extend the lead to 4-0. Mari Alvarez hit a two-run home run in the bottom half of the fourth to cut the Pioneers deficit to two.

Fiori hit a two-out RBI single to center field in the sixth inning to score Stewart, but Makena Dahir had a two-RBI triple in the bottom half of the inning to bring Lewis & Clark within one, 5-4. The Pioneers were down to their last out with runners on the corners, when Alvarez popped it up to second where Stewart had a diving catch to secure the win.

Fiori finished the game 2-for-2 with an RBI and a stolen base, Haley was 2-for-3, with a stolen base and run scored, and Hussey went 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored.

Brown earned her first collegiate win with three strikeouts in four innings. Brennan (1) recorded the last two outs and picked up the save.

Charlize Pope (3-2) received the loss after she pitched 3.0 innings, struck out five, and allowed four runs on six hits. Alvarez went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Dahir was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

The Red Dragons are back in action Wednesday, March 13, for a doubleheader against Pacific starting at 8:00 pm EST (5:00 pm PST).
