Red Dragons Finish Fifth at RIT Invitational, Leonard Wins 149 lb. Division

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Oneonta wrestling team placed fifth out of 14 teams at the 58th RIT Invitational and had four wrestlers finish in the top four in their respective weight divisions on Saturday. Junior Avery Leonard (Milford, N.Y./Milford Central) won the 149 lb. class, freshman Jackson Maby (Susquehanna, PA/Susquehanna Community) finished second in the 141 lb. division, senior Carson LiCastri (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow High School) took third at 197 lbs., and junior Kennith Jackson (New Orleans, LA/) secured fourth in the heavyweight (285) division. As a team, the Red Dragons scored 107 points for fifth-place, Williams College finished first with 155.5 points, and the host-site, RIT, placed third with 123.5 points.

On his way to a first-place finish, Leonard went 5-0 with four tech falls and a major decision. He started the tournament with a 19-3 tech fall over Dominic Dedola (Penn State Behrend), then a 17-2 tech fall against Nikolas Fegert (Pitt-Bradford). The junior continued the trend and scored a 17-1 tech fall versus Dara Heydarpour (RIT), and advanced to the finals with a 16-1 tech fall over Gannon White (Norwich) in the semifinal match. In the first-place match, Leonard defeated Mike Glynn (RIT) in a 16-5 major decision.

Maby finished 4-1 with two pins and two major decisions for his second-place finish. He started the day with two first round falls over Vananthony Trunzo (John Carroll) in 33 seconds and Donnie Morton (Williams College) at 2:06. The freshman scored two majors in the quarterfinal and semifinal to advance to the first-place match. He beat Trevor Bishop (St. John Fisher) 11-0 then Hayden Myers (Wesleyan (CT)) 14-6. Maby dropped a 3-1 decision to Gabe Goss (Oswego) in the first-place match.

LiCastri had a 4-1 outing with three pins and a tech fall for a third-place finish. He recorded two first-round pins at the start of the tournament against Hugh Tevis (Wesleyan (CT)) (1:06) and Dustin Koskinen-Falls (Oswego) (2:42). In the consolation semifinal, LiCastri pinned Nolan Fenton (Penn State Behrend) at 3:43 and advanced to the third-place match where the senior defeated Jesse Kanatzar (John Carroll) with an 18-2 tech fall.

Jackson went 5-1 in the 285 lb. division with four falls and one major decision for his fourth-place finish. He started the day with two pins against Cole Mullenix (Case Western Reserve) in 1:18 and Kade Crawford (Norwich) in 5:37. Jackson went to the consolation side where he scored a 10-0 major decision over Jacob Holtz (John Carroll) then two falls versus Kade Crawford (Norwich) (1:41) and Thomas Lunt (John Carroll) (5:53). The third-place match was a default forfeit since Jackson had already competed in six matches.

Sophomore Cameron Hinchcliff (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) finished 4-2 with two tech falls and a pin in 125 lb. division. He started off with a 17-2 tech fall against Hunter Williams (Penn State Behrend). On the consolation side, Hinchcliff scored a 21-4 tech fall over Carl Santariello (St. John Fisher), a 5-1 decision against Jacob Deysher (RIT), then he pinned Xavier DeJesus Remchuck (Utica) at 1:10.

Senior Danny Poggi (West Islip/West Islip) picked up three wins including a major decision at 133 lbs. He defeated John Schneider (Williams College) in a 10-1 major decision in his first match, then beat Matthew Carrozza (Trinity (CT)) in a 1-0 decision. Poggi final victory was an 8-3 decision over Derek Bernardino (St. John Fisher).

Juniors Aydin DeForest (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham), Jack Kohrs (Monroe, NY/Monroe-Woodbury High School), sophomore Ariel Waldman (), and freshman Ryley Monica (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson Central) all recorded two wins. DeForest had a 37 second pin over James Sturek (Oswego) at 174 lbs., and a 17-2 tech fall against Luke Burns (Wesleyan (CT)). Khors had a 1:22 fall and a decision win at 157 lbs., while Monica had a 2:26 pin and a decision at 157. Waldman competed at 133 lbs., and scored a 17-0 tech fall and a 9-6 decision.

The Red Dragons are back in action on Saturday, December 14, when they host a tri-match against WPI and Utica starting at 12 pm in G. Hal Chase Gymnasium.
