Wrestling Upends WPI and Utica in Tri-Match

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta wrestling team defeated WPI and Utica in their home tri-match in Chase Gymnasium, Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons beat the Engineers, 27-21, before they dismantled the Pioneers, 49-6. Oneonta had a handful of wrestlers win two matches on the day as the team improved to 7-0 on the season in dual matches, while WPI moved to 5-1 and Utica dropped to 0-5.

Oneonta 27, WPI 21 
The Red Dragons won six of their matches against WPI which included a pin, two tech falls, and two major decisions. Freshman Jackson Maby (Susquehanna, PA/Susquehanna Community) recorded a 15-0 tech fall in 3:57 against Mason Medina at 141 lbs., then junior Avery Leonard (Milford, N.Y./Milford Central) followed up with a 20-4 tech fall in 5:38 over Mason Basara at 149 lbs. Freshman Ryley Monica (Adams, NY/South Jefferson Central) picked up a 14-2 major decision at 157 lbs. over Joey Baisley and sophomore Mason Rappold (/) earned a 10-7 decision against Theo Sawyers at 165 lbs. to put Oneonta ahead 17-9.

Seniors Jack Ryan (Trumbull, CT/) and Carson LiCastri (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow High School) sealed the victory for the Red Dragons with a fall and a major decision. Ryan pinned Ryan Hsu in 1:12 at 184 lbs., while LiCastri defeated Nicolas LeSieur in a 14-5 major decision at 197 lbs. 

Oneonta 49, Utica 6
Oneonta took nine of the 10 matches against Utica with five tech falls, one fall, and three forfeits. Sophomore Cameron Hinchcliff (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) started the Red Dragons off with a 22-4 tech fall in 5:26 over Xavier DeJesus Remchuck at 125 lbs.

Both Maby (141) and Leonard (149) picked up their second tech fall of the day against their respective Pioneer opponents. Maby scored a 19-3 tech fall at 4:36 versus Rian Kirker, and Leonard won his match, 21-3 at 2:04, against Billy Beseth. Monica (157) joined the trend and beat Hunter Morton in an 18-1 tech fall at 2:41.

Rappold (165) pinned Seth Richardson in 4:01, then junior Aydin DeForest (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) defeated Andrew Michel with a 15-0 tech fall in 3:00 at 174 lbs. Ryan, LiCastri, and junior Kennith Jackson (New Orleans, LA/) all earned wins via forfeit at 184 lbs., 197 lbs., and 285 lbs.

The Red Dragons are back in action on Saturday, January 11, for the Manganaro Duals at Ursinus College at 10 am.
