ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Oneonta wrestling team hosted the 55th annual New York State Collegiate Championship Open in Dewar Arena Saturday, where six Red Dragons won their weight division, 14 received All-State recognition, and the team finished in first place out of 20 groups to win the program's first NYS Championship team title. The tournament had Division I, III, and junior-college teams participate and consisted of a freshman/sophomore division and a upperclassmen/open division. Oneonta finished the event with 265 points, Brockport was in second with 224 points, and Ithaca took third with 214 points.

Leonard went 3-0 with three tech falls to win the 149 lb. open division. The junior started the tournament with a 17-2 tech fall in 3:34 over Albany's Sean Romanski, then advanced to the first-place match with a 17-1 tech fall in 3:53 against Merchant Marine's Matthew Trinidad. Leonard faced Hofstra's (unattached) Dylan Zenion in the final and recorded four takedowns in the first period for a 19-3 tech fall in 4:32.
Ryan finished 3-0 with a pin and a tech fall as he won the 184 lb. open. The senior started off with five takedowns in a 19-2 tech fall in 5:00 versus Merchant Marine's Eric DeWald, then he beat Army Prep's Mark Ayala in an 11-4 decision to advance to the finals. Ryan pinned Niagara County Community College's Aiden Poe at 2:29 in the first-place match.
LiCastri scored two falls and finished 3-0 to win the 197 lb. open. He began the day with a 42 second fall against Oswego's Salvador Hernandez, then moved onto the finals with an 11-3 major decision over Army Prep's Brenton Russell. LiCastri went up against Army Prep's Ryland Whitworth in the first-place match and pinned Whitworth in 40 seconds.
Colloca went 4-0 with two falls in the 125 lb. freshman/sophomore division. He started off with back-to-back first round falls in 1:39 and 1:04. Colloca then defeated Utica's Xavier DeJesus-Remchuck with a 7-5 decision, where he scored an escape, a takedown and a two-point nearfall in the final period. He beat his fellow Red Dragon teammate, Hinchcliff, in the first-place match.
Maby recorded three falls and a tech fall to go 4-0 in the 141 lb. freshman/sophomore class. He advanced to the final with three straight first-round pins against University of Albany's Klue Thaw (1:27), Ithaca's John Naparano (0:54), and Brockport's Dylan Nolan (2:25). The freshman faced Ithaca's William Bentrim in the first-place match, where Maby scored a takedown and a four-point nearfall in the first two periods then an escape in the third for a 15-0 tech fall at 5:08.
Rappold had two pins and finished 4-0 in the 165 lb. freshman/sophomore division. The sophomore recorded two first-round falls in his first two matches against Merchant Marine's Vincent Vogan (1:03) and Ithaca's Sebastian Panzenbeck (1:09). He took an early lead with a takedown and a four-point nearfall in the first period and defeated Nassau Community College's Joseph Mattei in a 7-3 decision. Rappold won the first-place match by disqualification against Merchant Marine's Colby Cloutier.
Hinchcliff competed in the 125 lb. freshman/sophomore division and recorded two tech falls and a pin for a second-place finish. The sophomore started with a 19-3 tech fall against Oswego's Matt Dougherty in 3:42, then he pinned Brockport's Dylan Levine in 5:53. Hinchcliff bested RIT's Jacob Deysher with a 19-4 tech fall in the semifinals, before he faced Colloca in the first-place match.
Monica finished with three wins, including two tech falls, for a second-place finish at 157 lb. freshman/sophomore class. The freshman started off with a 15-0 tech fall in 6:10 against Brockport's Austin Boff, then another 15-0 tech fall with 12 nearfall points in 2:04 over Utica's Hunter Morton. In the semifinals, Monica scored a takedown with 1:19 remaining and won a 9-6 decision against Niagara County Community College's Michael Syposs. He fell in the finals to the freshman/sophomore division's Most Outstanding Wrestler, Niagara County Community College's Teshaun Mathew.
DeForest took fourth in the 174 lb. open with a fall and a tech fall. He started the tournament with a 29 second pin against Elmira's Casey Cooper. In the consolation semifinals, the junior defeated Jamestown Community College's Kyle Keefe with four takedowns in an 18-2 tech fall in 5:57.
Poggi finished in fifth in the 133 lb. Open with a pin and a tech fall. He started the day with a 3:45 fall in quarterfinals against Ajmal Akktari (Unattached). The senior then won a 24-7 tech fall against Nassau Community College's Joseph Ramirez in the fifth-place match.
Jackson picked up two wins, including a fall, for a fifth-place finish in the 285 lb. Open. He pinned University of Albany's Dominic Wood at 3:58 in the consolation round. In the fifth-place match, Jackson scored a takedown with 1:11 left and gained the riding bonus to earn a 4-0 decision over Oswego's Kevin Arriaza.
Waldman recorded two falls and three wins for a fifth-place finish in the 133 lb. Freshman/sophomore division. He started with two falls against Jamestown Community College's Garrett Spychala (0:48) and Utica's Logan Banks (3:56). Waldman won the fifth-place match by no contest.
Rados placed sixth in the 157 lb. freshman/sophomore division with five wins including two tech falls. He started with an 11-0 major decision where he scored a takedown in each period over Brockport's Samuel Zeigler. After winning by forfeit in his first match on the consolation side, Rados scored a 17-1 tech fall in 6:07 against Brockport's Dominick Parente then a 16-0 tech fall against Morton. The sophomore clinched All-State with a 10-3 decision over Oswego's Will Burnell. Rados and RIT's Carter Tadusz double forfeited the fifth-place match after already competing in the maximum six matches.
Nania won three matches with a fall and tech fall in the 197 lb. freshman/sophomore division. The freshman started the day with a 24 second pin against Hunter College's Jevin Torres. Nania recorded five takedowns in a 16-3 major decision against Albany's Joseph Peretta, then earned All-State honors with a 15-0 tech fall in 3:37.
The Red Dragons are back in action on Saturday, December 7, for the RIT Invitational in Rochester at 9 am.
