SCRANTON, PA. -- The Oneonta wrestling team traveled to the University of Scranton and went 5-0 in dual matches to win the team title out of eight teams at the Electric City Duals on Sunday. The Red Dragons combined for 20 falls and nine tech falls on the day, while only dropping seven matches.
Junior
Avery Leonard (Milford, N.Y./Milford Central) and freshman
Jackson Maby (Susquehanna, PA/Susquehanna Community) both went 5-0 with two first-round pins and three tech falls. Seniors
Carson LiCastri (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow High School) and
Jack Ryan (Trumbull, CT/) each finished 5-0, LiCastri had four first-round falls while Ryan had three. Freshman
Ryley Monica (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson Central) recorded four wins with two tech falls and a pin, and senior
Danny Poggi (West Islip/West Islip) had four wins with a fall.
The tournament involved eight teams that were initially split into two round robin groups. The top two teams from each group advanced into the winner's bracket, while the other four teams went into a consolation bracket. Oneonta defeated New Jersey City, 46-6, Scranton 'B', 40-17, and Elmira, 55-0, in round robin play, then beat Pittsburgh-Bradford, 46-3, and Scranton 'A', 39-8, in the winner's bracket. Scranton 'A' took second place, and New Jersey City finished third.
Round Robin Match 1: Oneonta State 46, New Jersey City 6
Oneonta only dropped one match against New Jersey City. Sophomore
Cameron Hinchcliff (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) (125 lbs.), Maby (141 lbs.), and junior
Kennith Jackson (New Orleans, LA/) (285 lbs.) all secured a pin in the last minute of the first round of their respective matches. Leonard had a 15-0 tech fall in 3:47 at 149 lbs., then Monica recorded a 16-0 tech fall in 4:01 at 157 lbs. Poggi and sophomore
Mason Rappold () each had a decision victory at 133 lbs. and 165 lbs., respectively, and Ryan (184 lbs.) and LiCastri (197 lbs.) won their matches via forfeit.
Round Robin Match 2: Oneonta 40, Scranton "B" 17
The Red Dragons won seven matches against Scranton's 'B' Team. Poggi, Maby, Ryan and LiCastri all scored a fall victory within 90 seconds of their respective matches. Leonard recorded his second tech fall, 17-2, in 2:41, and Rappold competed at 174 lbs. and had a 17-0 tech fall in 5:51. Junior
Andrew Morris (Holland Patent, N.Y./Holland Patent) took the 285 lbs. match by forfeit.
Round Robin Match 3: Oneonta State 55, Elmira 0
Oneonta swept Elmira in the final stage of the round robin, recording five pins and two tech falls. Freshman
Andrew Montagano (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (125 lbs.) and Poggi started the contest off with a pair of wins via forfeit. Maby scored a 15-0 tech fall in 3:51, then Leonard followed up with an 18-1 tech fall in 2:48.
The Red Dragons strung together five straight falls at 157, 165, 174, 184, and 197. Monica pinned his opponent in 47 seconds, junior
Jonathan Zenny (Valley Stream, NY/G.W. Hewlett) recorded a 1:00 fall, senior
Joel Zea (Queens, NY/Thomas Edison) scored a 1:11 pin, Ryan had a 57-second pin, and LiCastri ended it with a 2:09 fall. Freshman
Charles Rosenthal (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) wrapped up the match against the Soaring Eagles with a 9-3 decision at 285 lbs.
Winner's Semifinals, Match 4: Oneonta State 46, Pitt.-Bradford 3
Oneonta totaled nine wins, including four pins and two tech falls, against Pitt.-Bradford. Sophomore
Ariel Waldman () picked up a 4:59 pin at 133 lbs., Leonard pinned his opponent at 1:23, Rappold scored a fall in 3:30 at 165 lbs., and LiCastri recorded a 45-second fall.
Maby had an 18-2 tech fall at 5:48 and Monica collected a 16-0 tech fall at 4:12. Sophomore
Billy Colloca (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon Senior High) had a 9-8 decision at 125 lbs., while Ryan won a 7-0 decision, and sophomore
Dean Visconti () won 174 lbs. by forfeit.
Winner's Finals, Match 5: Oneonta State 39, Scranton "A" 8
The Red Dragons continued their dominance in the final against the Scranton 'A' Team and recorded eight wins with four pins and a tech fall. Leonard capped off the day at 149 lbs. with a 1:15 fall, Ryan pinned his 184-lb. opponent in 1:19, LiCastri won the 197-lb. match with a 1:25 pin, and Jackson finished the day with a 39-second fall at 285 lbs.
Maby ended with a 19-3 tech fall in 5:12 at 141 lbs., while Hinchcliff scored a 15-5 major decision at 125 lbs. Poggi wrapped up the tournament with a 9-7 decision at 133 lbs. and Monica recorded a 7-0 decision in his last match at 157 lbs.
Oneonta is back in action on Saturday, November 23, when they host the New York State Collegiate Championships in Dewar Arena starting at 9 am.Â
