Wrestling Takes Second at Rhode Island Invitational

Cameron Hinchcliff and Avery Leonard Win Weight Classes

PROVIDENCE, RI. -- The Oneonta wrestling team traveled to Rhode Island College for the Veterans' All-American Classic Rhode Island Invitational and finished in second place in the team event out of 16 teams. Sophomore Cameron Hinchcliff (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) took home the crown at 125 lbs., junior Avery Leonard (Milford, N.Y./Milford Central) was the named the 149 lbs. Champion, and five other Red Dragons finished in the top four. The host institution, Rhode Island College, won the overall team event.

Hinchcliff went 4-0 with two tech falls and a pin to win the 125-division. He started the day with a 15-0 3:31 tech fall, then recorded a 4:57 fall against New England College's Hughes Patrick, the No. 2 seed in the bracket. The sophomore moved onto the finals with another 15-0 4:00 tech fall that included three four-point nearfalls. Hinchcliff defeated the No. 1 seed, Johnson and Wales' Ryan O'Rourke, in the final with a takedown in the first, an escape in the third, and riding time for a 5-2 decision.

Leonard's 4-0 performance included two tech falls and a major decision as he went on to win 149 lbs. The junior started the tournament off with a 15-0 2:23 tech fall then an 18-3 1:11 tech fall, recording three four-point nearfalls in each match. He upended New York Military's Jordan Joslyn with three takedowns in a 13-4 major decision to move on to the finals. Leonard had three takedowns in the first-place match for a 9-3 advantage against Eli Carr from Brown University, when Carr suffered an injury and the match was called at 5:53.

Seniors Carson LiCastri (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow High School) and Jack Ryan (Trumbull, CT/) took second place in their respective classes while senior Danny Poggi (West Islip/West Islip) and juniors Aydin DeForest (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) and Kennith Jackson (New Orleans, LA/) finished fourth.

LiCastri went 2-1 with a tech fall and a major decision at 197 lbs. for his second-place finish. He started off with a 15-0 2:12 tech fall against Maine Maritime Academy's Nathan Schobel, then recorded a couple takedowns and a reversal for an 11-3 major decision over Rhode Island's Anthony Fernandez. LiCastri dropped a 1-0 decision to Rhode Island's Matthew Kelly, who scored an escape with 1:25 left in the final period.

Ryan recorded a fall and a decision in his 2-1 second-place day at 184 lbs. He pinned Rhode Island's Roel Johnson at 2:17, then followed up with a 10-3 decision with two takedowns against Maine Maritime Academy's Ryan Fredette. Ryan dropped a 10-4 decision in the final to New York Military's Isael Perez.

Poggi recorded three wins with a pin and tech fall for a fourth-place finish at 133 lbs. The senior's first win was a 1:46 fall, then he scored three takedowns in an 11-0 major decision against Castleton's Cameron Davis. Poggi's final victory was a 19-3 7:00 tech fall with six takedowns against New England College's Michael Follo.

DeForest won four matches via fall, tech fall, and two major decisions for his fouth-place finish at 174 lbs. His first win was a 15-0 3:09 tech fall against Castleton's Skyler Sturdevant. The junior recorded a 12-1 major decision against Castleton's Braeden Gray and a 22-8 major decision over Iron Faith Wrestling's Gabriel Thomasson. DeForest's last win was a 1:55 fall against Castleton's Jake Long.

Jackson recorded four wins with two pins for a fourth-place finish at 285 lbs. He started the tournament with a 2:04 fall against Rhode Island's William Randall. The junior defeated Rhode Island's Christian Sewell in a 4-0 decision when he scored a takedown in the third period. After Jackson recorded a 3:48 fall, he went on to beat Castleton's Keonta Crawford in a 2-0 decision where he scored an escape in the second period and gained riding time by the end of the match.

The Red Dragons are back in action on Sunday, November 17, for the Electric City Duals in Scranton, Pa. starting at 10 am.
