Oneonta Falls to Potsdam in Five Sets

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team fell in five sets to Potsdam on Friday evening. The Red Dragons won 26-24 before losing 25-16. They bounced back 25-16 before dropping the fourth 25-13 and the fifth 16-14.

Freshman Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville) led Oneonta with a career-high 18 kills and seven blocks on .382 hitting. Junior Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) added ten kills (.333) and two blocks. Wish finished with seven kills, four blocks, and five digs, while junior Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) had seven and two blocks. Junior Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior) had a team-high 31 digs, while junior Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia) had 16. Freshman Hailey Herrera (Brooklyn, NY/Park Slope Collegiate) made 26 assists.

Megan Henry recorded 21 kills, while Alyssa Adams finished with 15 and 18 digs. Marissa Wagoner made three blocks, while Sophia Layer had 48 assists.

Oneonta took a 7-4 lead in the first set following a kill from Landversicht, but the Bears fought back to tie 9-9. Potsdam followed with a 3-0 run to take the lead and pushed ahead 16-13 after Megan Henry sent in an ace. Two consecutive kills from Landversicht and an ace by Zoe Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) tied 16-16. The teams traded leads until a 3-0 Potsdam span made it 21-18. Juniors Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia) and Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) blocked an Alyssa Adams attack to cut the lead to one and force a Bears' timeout. Junior Sabrina Squicciarini (Manorville, NY/St. Anthony's) recorded an ace when play resumed, and three straight Potsdam errors gave Oneonta a 24-22 advantage. The Bears tied at 24-24, but sophomore Keira Welsh (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) knocked in a kill, and Landversicht and freshman Hailey Herrera (Brooklyn, NY/Park Slope Collegiate) blocked an attack to secure the first-set win.

Potsdam took a 17-12 lead in the second following kills from Adams and Emily Prest. Sophomore Autumn Singleton (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) and Landversicht knocked in kills to cut the lead to four. Spano blocked an attack to make it 18-15, but the Bears responded with two kills from Megan Henry to lead by five. Potsdam continued to roll and closed out on a 5-1 run to tie 1-1.

The Red Dragons bounced back in the third set after a close start. A Kendrick ace and kills by Spano and Squicciarini put Oneonta ahead 12-10. After the Bears cut the lead to one, the Red Dragons went on a 4-0 run to go up 18-13. Blocks from Landversicht, Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside), and Welsh push the lead to seven. A pair of Potsdam errors sealed the set to make it 2-1 in Oneonta's favor.

The Bears claimed a narrow fourth-set victory. Neither side led by more than four points, as Potsdam took a 20-19 lead following a 3-0 run. Oneonta tied following a kill from Spano and stayed close until Potsdam took the final two points.

Potsdam led 14-11 in the fifth, but Spano and McCabe kills, and a Bears' error tied at 14-14. Potsdam's Henry and Adams sent in the final kills to win the match.

Oneonta next plays at Plattsburgh on Sat. Nov. 2 at 1 p.m.
