ONEONTA, N.Y. - Junior Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) scored an early first-half goal, which was all that was needed as the Oneonta women's soccer team defeated Plattsburgh 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 3-6-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Cardinals fall to 3-9-0 and 2-2-0 in the conference.
Following an Oneonta free kick, freshman Karsyn Kondracki (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) fired a shot at the Plattsburgh goal. Cardinals' goalkeeper Lauren Haley made the stop, and Plattsburgh countered with two corner attempts in the 8th and 9th minutes. In the 13th minute, Kondracki crossed the ball to Ring in front of the Cardinals' goal. Ring headed the ball just enough into the right corner to make it 1-0 at 13:24. The goal marks Ring's third of the season, while Kondracki's assist is a career first.
Oneonta kept the pressure up, with senior Shannon Lowney (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) narrowly sneaking a goal in the 25th minute after striking the woodwork. Plattsburgh responded with shots from Kelly Licata and Jillian that junior goalkeeper Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) saved. Freshman Sara Kealey (Seaford, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) took the final shot of the half that Haley turned aside in the 36th minute.
Plattsburgh controlled the midfield in the second half and outshot Oneonta 7-3. The Red Dragons' defense held down the stretch, and Oneonta nearly scored again when sophomore Keira Dashnow (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) had a one-on-one against the Cardinals' goalkeeper in the 82nd minute. Dashnow fired the shot into the goalie to keep the same score.
Plattsburgh finished outshooting Oneonta 11-8 and held a 13-1 corner kick advantage.
Meehan grabbed her second straight shutout and third of the season and made five saves. Haley made three saves for Plattsburgh.
Oneonta next hosts Morrisville on Sat. Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. for senior day.
